Free screenings of 'Films that Matter' in Galway this week.
The Huston School of Film & Digital Media will host a selection of free screenings of human rights films this Thursday 4th to Saturday 6th July - as part of the ‘Films That Matter’ series, presented by the Galway One World Centre and Amnesty International.

The screenings are designed to coincide with the Summer School in Cinema, Human Rights and Advocacy (CHRA) - which brings together students and professionals from around the world to reflect on how film can enhance human rights awareness.

The opening film at 6pm on Thursday is Swiss documentary ‘Forbidden Voices’, which examines how cyber-feminists in Cuba, China and Iran highlight human rights abuses through blogging.

This is followed by US documentary ‘Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry’, which follows Chinese dissident Ai Weiwei who gained international acclaim for using his postmodern works of art to express his political convictions.

Other highlights include Austrian documentary ‘Mama Illegal’ about three Moldavian women working illegally in Austria and Italy; and documentary ‘East Bloc Love’ about a homosexual activist from Belarus who fights for justice when his partner is shot and killed.

Further queries can be directed to the Galway One World Centre on (091) 530590 or by emailing: admin@galwayowc.org or Amnesty International Galway at: amnestygalway@amnesty.ie
