'Here Was Cuba' examines Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962.
Two Irish documentaries ‘Here Was Cuba’ and ‘The Summit’ are to feature in this week’s Sheffield Documentary Film Festival - receiving a world premiere and a special mountain cave screening respectively.

‘Here Was Cuba’, the directorial debut feature of editor Emer Reynolds and co-directed by John Murray, focuses on the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962 when the world stood on the brink of nuclear destruction.

The documentary is produced by Crossing the Line Productions and supported by the Irish Film Board and PBS in the US, and includes interviews with Sergei Khrushchev, son of the former Soviet premier; and John F Kennedy’s trusted advisor Ted Sorensen.

Director Emer Reynolds described herself and John as 'thrilled' ahead of its world premiere screening in Sheffield.

‘It’s an honour to be able to premiere our film to such a documentary-loving audience, especially on the occasion of Sheffield’s 20th Anniversary. We are really looking forward to screening the film there and hearing the response,’ she said.

Director Nick Ryan’s ‘The Summit’, about the tragic but heroic story of Limerick mountain climber Ger O’Donnell who died on K2, is to be given a special screening at High Peak Cavern, Castleton, as the festival transforms the cave into a cinema.

The Sheffield Documentary Film Festival runs from today 12th to 16th June.
