The Coen Brothers’ ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’ has its world premiere.

The Coen Brothers’ highly anticipated ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’ premiered at Cannes on yesterday and was greeted much critical praise and adoration, and has emerged as a serious contender for this year’s prestigious Palme d’Or award. Joel and Ethan Coen graced the red carpet along with stars Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake, Garret Hedlund, and rising star Oscar Isaac.

Set in New York City in the 1960s’, the story centres on a struggling singer-songwriter, Davis (played by Isaac), as he navigates New York’s folk music scene. Isaac, in his first major leading film role, has been garnering much praise for his portrayal of the disconnected artist, and also for his musical abilities as the film contains many lengthy sequences of him performing entire songs. The film is scheduled for a limited release in America on December 6 this year, followed by a wide release on December 20. The film is expected to be released in Ireland in January next year.

Sony Pictures Classics has finalised a deal to acquire the rights to the French film ‘Le Passe’ (The Past), from Iranian director Asghar Farhadi. According to the Hollywood Reporter, SPC has acquired the U.S. rights to the film, and this marks the second time that they have collaborated with Farhadi. SPC previously released Farhadi’s critically acclaimed ‘A Seperation’, which subsequently went on to win the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars in 2012. A family melodrama, the film premiered on Friday night in competition, and stars Berenice Bejo (The Artist), Ali Mosaffa, and Tahar Rahim. The film also drew rave reviews from critics at Cannes and will most likely be an awards contender, domestically and internationally.

Oscar winning director Paul Haggis’ (Crash) upcoming drama film ‘Third Person’ has gained plenty of interest from potential buyers over the weekend. Currently in post-production, the film stars Mila Kunis, Olivia Wilde, Irish actor Liam Neeson, Kim Basinger, James Franco, Maria Bello, and Adrian Brody, and follows three interconnected love stories of three couples in three cities looking at the beginning, middle, and end of a relationship. Belgian sales, production, and finance powerhouse Corsan has finalised deals in 23 markets, including Canada, China, France, Italy, Spain, and Latin America. Deals are currently in discussion for the U.K. and U.S. markets.

Elsewhere, Worldview Entertainment has optioned Andrew Domink’s script ‘Blonde’, which centres on the life of Hollywood 1950s’ icon Marilyn Monroe, with Wild Bunch shopping the project to foreign buyers at the festival. Dominik, director of critically acclaimed ‘The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford’ and the recently released ‘Killing Them Softly’, adapted the script from Joyce Carol Oates’ fictionalised biography of the late actress. ‘Blonde’ is Oates’ longest work of fiction and focuses on many of Monroe’s relationships, including her relationship with President John F. Kennedy.

In Irish news, Irish director Ruairí Robinson’s feature-film debut ‘Last days on Mars’ will receive its first two screenings at the festival today. Produced by Fantastic Films and Qwerty Films with the Irish Film Board funding, the film stars American actor Liev Schrieber (The Manchurian Candidate, Defiance), Ramola Garai (Inside I’m Dancing, Amazing Grace), and Olivia Williams (An Education, Anna Karenina), in a tale of astronauts sent to collect specimens on Mars who encounter a terrifying force.

The film was chosen as part of the prestigious ‘Director’s Fortnight’ line-up. A total of 23 feature films will screen as part of the Director’s Fortnight line-up, which is non-competitive, but debut films - including ‘Last Days on Mars’- are eligible for the Camera d’Or prize.
