Irish stand-up comedian and RTE star Jason Byrne will begin filming his new sitcom ‘Father Figure’ for BBC One on 6th June in Elstree Studios, following a successful run of its original incarnation on BBC Radio 2.
‘Father Ted’ star Pauline McLynn and ‘Raw’ actor Dermot Crowley will co-star as Grandma Mary and Granddad Pat, alongside Byrne’s character Tom - a married father of two sons whose parental responsibilities are complicated by bad luck and the antics of his extended family.
A BBC Production, the series will be produced by Julia McKenzie and executive produced by Stephen McCrum (Mrs Browns’ Boys).
Byrne previously discussed how all the characters in the show are based on real-life people and outrageous situations he has found himself in over the years.
‘It’s been a big dream of mine and I'd never have thought I would get the chance to join the ranks of the television sitcom world,’ he said.
Controller of comedy commissioning for the BBC, Cheryl Taylor, described Jason Byrne as ‘a bright and bouncy performer and already much loved by comedy enthusiasts everywhere.’
Jason Byrne’s past acting credits includes a role in 2011 film ‘Killing Bono’ and an appearance in an episode of Father Ted and is best known in Ireland for RTÉ show ‘Anonymous’, in which celebrities wore latex masks to disguise themselves for the hidden camera prank show.
