Aisling Walsh will direct an upcoming single drama on the Welsh poet, Dylan Thomas, entitled ‘A Poet in New York’.

The drama centres on Thomas’ fourth and final visit to New York in October 1953 and will give audiences an insight into the circumstances surrounding his tragic death during his stay in New York. The story will look at the playwright’s decision to take part in a production of his play ‘Under Milk Wood’ in order to raise funds for a trip to Hollywood to write an opera with the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky.

BBC2 have confirmed that Griff Rhys Jones’ independent production company Modern TV will produce the series, and filming will begin in late summer this year in Cardiff and Laugharne for a transmission on BBC2 and BBC1 Wales next year.

The drama was written by Andrew Davies (Mr. Selfridge, Quirke, House of Cards), produced by Ruth Caleb, and Bethan Jones will serve as executive producer alongside Rhys Jones. Walsh previously directed ‘Room at the Top’ for BBC4 and ‘Loving Miss Hatto’ for BBC1, for which she received an IFTA nomination in the ‘Best Director in TV Drama’ category at this year’s awards ceremony.
