Dublin-based Irish film composer Stefan French has been chosen to participate in the '2013 NYU/ASCAP Foundation Film Scoring Workshop’ - spearheaded by Emmy winning ‘Homeland’ and ‘24’ composer Sean Callery.
Mr French - who studied composition for film & TV at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and composition at the DIT Conservatory of Music – recently provided original music for the documentary 'Behind the Sword in the Stone' about the making of John Boorman's 'Excalibur' in Ireland, currently in post-production.
He will also be taught by ‘X-Files’ composer Mark Snow and ‘Naked Gun’ composer Ira Newborn at the prestigious workshop, which will be held at NYU's Steinhardt School in June and address such topics as the creative process, orchestrating and conducting - before culminating in a full day of recording sessions.
This year Mr French was also chosen as one of four composers for the IMRO/RTE/Filmbase film scoring workshop, which will see him composing and recording a score with the RTE Concert Orchestra later in the year.
Following the New York workshop, Mr French will attend another orchestration workshop in Vienna this July taught by Conrad Pope, who worked as orchestrator on such films as ‘Life of Pi’, ‘Argo’ and ‘Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part 2’.
Mr French’s work has already been performed by the DIT Symphony Orchestra, the Concorde Ensemble and members of the RTE Concert Orchestra, and he has performed extensively in Italy, France, Scotland, England and China.
