Tullamore actor Sam Keeley - best known for ‘What Richard Did’ and TV’s ‘Misfits’ - has landed a major role in ‘Monsters: Dark Continent,’ the sequel to Gareth Edwards’ critically acclaimed sci-fi horror ‘Monsters’.

The first film - which won four British Independent Film Awards - focused on the aftermath of an alien invasion in which a journalist and an American tourist were forced to team up to survive a journey through an ‘infected zone’ in Mexico filled with giant creatures roaming the Earth.

Sam Keeley follows in the footsteps of his ‘What Richard Did’ co-star Jack Reynor, recently cast in Transformers 4, in landing another role in a major special effects blockbuster set to bring him to the attention of an international audience.

Principal photography is now underway in Jordan on the sequel, helmed by ‘Misfits’ director Tom Green making his big screen debut, and will continue for the next five weeks before moving to Detroit.

Gareth Edwards, who is currently filming the latest cinematic remake of Godzilla, will executive produce this time round, in a co-production between StreetDance 3D, Vertigo Films and 42, the production company behind ‘Welcome to the Punch’.

Producer Allan Niblo, Vertigo Films, said: ‘Monsters: Dark Continent is a sci-fi action film that remains true to the artistry and intelligence of its prequel Monsters as well as providing the excitement, thrills and set pieces of a genre film. We’re very excited to see Tom Green’s vision unfold.’

Sam Keeley made his debut in 'The Other Side of Sleep', directed by Rebecca Daly, before winning the part of Jamie in ‘Misfits’, the long-lost brother of Robert Sheehan’s character. He also has to his list of credits 'This Must Be The Place' starring Sean Penn, the Jack Taylor films screened on TV3 and RTE’s hit series Raw.

He will star in ‘Monsters: Dark Continent’ alongside cast members Johnny Harris (Welcome To The Punch) and Joe Dempsie (Game Of Thrones).
