Oscars 2013… Ben Affleck’s ‘Argo’ made history at last night’s Oscars ceremony, becoming the first film to win Best Picture, without a director nomination, since 1989's ‘Driving Miss Daisy’. The CIA thriller, which Affleck produced, directed and starred in, was the frontrunner to win Best Picture at the 85th Academy Awards, after the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences was condemned by Hollywood for not nominating Affleck in the Director category.
‘Argo’ beat ‘Lincoln’, ‘Life of Pi’, ‘Beasts of the Southern Wild’, ‘Zero Dark Thirty’, ‘Amour’, ‘Les Miserables’, ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ and ‘Django Unchained’ for Best Picture. The award is Affleck’s second Oscar, having won Best Screenplay in 1998 for 'Good Will Hunting', alongside co-writer and co-star Matt Damon. ‘Argo’ was also producer George Clooney’s second Oscar, having won for Best Supporting Actor in 2006 for ‘Syriana’. Grant Heslov also produced on ‘Argo’.
RTÉ Two is broadcasting the Oscars at 9pm tonight. For the full list of winners click here.
