RTÉ has made the next step in promoting its client sales campaign by striking a deal with Harvey Norman Sofas for the furniture store to sponsor its new daytime programme ‘Today’, which officially launched in Cork last week.

In a new departure for RTÉ Television, ‘Today’ will include a number of sponsored segments in addition to the title sponsorship. Harvey Norman previously sponsored RTÉ daytime shows ‘Four Live’ and ‘The Daily Show’.

As part of the sponsorship deal, Harvey Norman will be at the core of an overall RTÉ client sales campaign, which will see Harvey Norman receive various sponsorship credits per show across a number of RTÉ platforms, including the RTÉ Player.

It was also announced that a number of new and familiar faces will be joining hosts Daithí Ó’Sé and Maura Derrane, who will present Monday to Thursday, and Norah Casey and Bláthnaid Ní Chofaigh, who will host on Fridays.

RTÉ regulars Martin Shanahan (Martin & Paul’s Surf ‘n’ Turf), and Kevin Dundon (The Afternoon Show) are back at RTÉ with fellow chefs Lilly Higgins, Paul Flynn and Catherine Fulvio, to provide daily cooking items on ‘Today’.

Joining the chefs are lifestyle guru and wedding planner Peter Kelly of ‘Franc’s DIY Brides’ fame, consumer expert and journalist Conor Pope, ‘Off the Rails’ presenters Brendan Courtney and Sonya Lennon, and fellow stylists Annemarie O’Connor and Christofer Kaprelian. Travel expert Fionn Davenport, Dr Chris Luke and psychologists Julie McCall and Brenda Roche make up the final lineup.

‘Today’ will be broadcast live from RTÉ studios in Cork, making it the largest production the broadcaster has ever situated in Cork.

Colm Crowley, series editor on ‘Today’, said: “We’re looking forward to the opportunity to showcase the skills of the RTÉ Cork team and to introduce a unique perspective to the national conversation. ‘Today’ will be about moving the focus out of Dublin and getting a different point of view.”

The first live show kicks off November 5, with Crowley, executive producer Janet Frawley and series producer Marie Toft all on board.

Speaking at the launch in Cork’s English Market on Thursday, which was attended by the Lord Mayor of Cork John Buttimer, RTÉ Television’s managing director Glen Killane said: “RTÉ has always had a strong commitment to Cork and this announcement is a further show of our support for Cork and the regions and our confidence in the expertise and abilities of the production team in RTÉ Cork. There’s a real track record of broadcasting excellence here – we know that programmes produced in Cork have set the standards in lifestyle programming.”

Killane’s comments come just days after it was announced RTÉ’s regional offices would relocate to institutes of technology in Dundalk, Athlone and Waterford, ensuring no further job losses. RTÉ’s London offices closed last Friday, with four permanent staff forced to retire or relocate.

‘Today’ will air on November 5.
