Northern Irish production company Causeway Pictures has struck a deal with LA-based Inception Media that will see the US company distribute two of Causeway’s features before production has even begun.

In an announcement made at last week’s Toronto International Film Festival, where a total of nine Irish-attached productions screened, Inception told how it acquired the rights to two Causeway productions, ‘Vampires vs Leprechauns’ and ‘DEADlocked’. The deal marks the first time the US company has pre-bought a film prior to production.

‘Vampires vs Leprechauns’ is currently in pre-production in Belfast, where it will begin principal photography in the last week in November. The horror-comedy is set in the fictional Irish village of Comhla Breac, which is one night plagued by blood thirsty vampires who are attempting to open a gateway to Hell.

Irish storyteller Conroy is the only one who knows of a secret which lies hidden beneath Comhla Breac. As the undead wreak havoc on the townspeople, help may be on the way.

‘Red Mist’ writer Spence Wright has written the script, while actor and director Allan Gildea (The Patrol, The Goldfish Bowl) will direct the feature in various locations around Belfast. Chris Patterson and Paddy McCarney will produce for Causeway.

Patterson, who is also executive producer on the project, said of the deal with Inception: “We are very pleased to be working with Inception Media Group to bring these two exciting Irish genre projects to audiences in the US and Canada. Inception has the retail relationships we need to bring these titles to market.”

Belfast-based Causeway Pictures issued a teaser trailer of the horror earlier this month, as well as series of behind-the-scenes images which were taken at UTV’s Belfast green screen studios.

In the images, Belfast-based actor Matthew Faris (Desecration, Coast) can be seen playing a vampire, while Christian Jackson takes on another role.

Meanwhile Causeway’s second horror, ‘DEADlocked’, is scheduled to begin production in Belfast in December. This dark horror sees the CEO of a bank attempt to escape an apocalyptic nightmare via his private helicopter as the rest of Belfast succumbs to a grey fever sparked by a volcanic ash cloud.

Brothers Ryan and Andrew Tohill (Eye-Line) from Co Antrim will direct ‘DEADlocked’, with Patterson and McCarney producing from Wright’s script.

Inception has secured all North American rights to both films, including theatrical, digital, television and home video. UK-based 7&7 brokered the deal: “I am thrilled to have secured a deal with Inception Media Group on the two titles. No doubt we have found the right partners to ensure a very successful release in North America,” said Maura Ford of 7&7.

Both films are scheduled for a 2013 release, and have received funding from the Northern Ireland Screen fund supported by Invest NI and part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund. See a teaser trailer for ‘Vampires vs Leprechauns’ below.
