The first feature film to be shot on the newly developed Digital Bolex camera will shoot in Ireland in September.

‘Look to the Son’, an independent Irish feature film, will begin principal photography in Dublin and Kildare next month, using the new 2K raw camera. The film will shoot in areas including Clondalkin, Dublin city centre and Celbridge.

The Digital Bolex D16 camera has been developed by filmmakers and shoots on 2K raw footage rather than compressed video.

‘Look to the Son’ will be directed by former BCFE student Dave Kavanagh, who will also serve as the DoP as well as editor of the film. The feature focuses on two separate families who have the same father; one stuck in a drug riddled life; the other coming from a privileged background. Unforeseen events throw the two families together, resulting in an unlikely unit.

Steve Harris developed the original idea while Catherine Thomas Banks wrote the script. Harris will produce, with Adam Synes the second DP. First AD is Sarah Lafferty with Eva Mahon the second AD. Michael Donnelly will look after grip and Jesus Lopez will be in charge of key grip.

The film will star Brian O'Riordan, Steve Harris, Catherine Thomas Banks, Nathan Harris, Liam O'Maoldhomhnaigh, Megan Keegan and Alicja Ayres.

The crew is funding the project through online funding website fundit.ie, having been inspired by Joe Rubinstein and Elle Schneider, who managed to get their Digital Bolex camera off the ground through a similar campaign. The ‘Look to the Son’ crew aims to reach €3,500 in 31 days.

The Digital Bolex crew debuted the camera at Cannes in May, when their short film ‘One Small Step’ screened at the festival. Filming will continue on ‘Look to the Son’ until early November when Kavanagh will edit the film in post production.
