Irish short film ‘Angel’ is making waves on the international festival circuit, having received 13 nominations and six wins over the last few months.

It has recently been awarded Best Editing, Best Cinematography and Best Short at the Best Shorts Competition, California. It also scooped five prizes at the Fastnet Film Festival in Cork last May, including Best of Festival and Best Drama.

Shot in Dublin over two days, the short aims to capture Dublin’s raw, dark and inhospitable characters. Ruán Magan produced and directed, with Ned O’Hanlon, ChaCha Seigne, Padraig O’Neill, Tim Morris, Stephen O’Connell and Mark Geary all lending their skills to make the film happen.

The short has also been officially selected in four upcoming film festivals across Europe and the US.

The film stars Patrick Bergin, Ronan Leahy, Mark Doherty, Natalia Kostrowa, Mary Murray and Karl Sheils. It also introduces Magan’s daughter Aobh in the lead role.

Another Irish short film ‘Two Hearts’ has been invited to screen at the Montreal World Film Festival which takes place next month. The short, which follows the life of Lorna, a young girl who is haunted by her past when a man she used to know is released from prison, will screen at the Focus on World Cinema section.

Written by Colin Thornton and directed by his brother Darren Thornton, the short will then screen at the SF Shorts: The San Francisco International Festival of Short Film in September, followed by a screening at the International Short Film Festival of Cyprus in October.

The film was funded under the IFB Signatures Scheme, and was produced by Colette Farrell for Calipo Pictures. The Thornton brothers recently received further IFB funding for their feature ‘Ten Dates with Mad Mary’, due to begin production in 2013.
