Future of Film Under The Microscope At UCD Imagine Science Film Festival
12 Jul 2012 :
Professor Anil Kokaram with his Oscar at Trinity College
The UCD Imagine Science Film Festival has been in full swing since last week (July 5), and one of the festival highlights, The Future of Film & Video event, takes place tomorrow night (Friday July 13).

Getting underway just after 6pm, the event will feature Oscar winners and visual effects experts Simon Robinson and Anil Kokaram, and BAFTA-winning producer/director Mark Jacobs. The trio will put film under the microscope and discuss its future and that of television in a techno-cultured world.

All three have vast amounts of experience in the visual effects world, with Robinson the founder and chief scientist of visual effects house The Foundry, which provides digital effects for mega productions such as ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Boardwalk Empire’.

Kokaram, a Trinity College Professor, is a consultant at The Foundry, which has offices in both the UK and LA. Kokaram is responsible for helping set up video effects post-production software with The Foundry and in 2009 won an Oscar for his work. Jacobs, a programme manager at BBC Academy, has recently completed work with David Attenborough on a multi-screen interactive film.

The event will be eight-minute individual talks and a panel discussion, which will be moderated by broadcaster and writer Stephen Price, who has worked with the BBC, Today FM and the Sunday Times.

Aside from an engaging discussion, those attending can also expect a bit of fun on the night! Sigmedia, from the Engineering School at Trinity College, will showcase their 3D cinema rig (a mirror rig) at the event, giving audience members the chance to see themselves in 3D on the 3D screen.

The event will also host an ‘Inception’-like live demo of headphone-based immersive audio, where guests will have the opportunity to view a screen and navigate around a virtual environment, hearing the sound as if they were in that environment.

Friday’s event is the second of many UCD events taking place on July 13. It follows The Race for the Double Helix, a discussion on biology, genetics, zoology and everything in between, with Nobel Prize-winner James Watson. The event precedes Bad Robots, showing at the Light House Cinema at 7pm, and a performance by the Sci-Lens Yurodny Ensemble at The Factory, also at 7pm.

The UCD Imagine Science Festival is held in collaboration with New York’s Imagine Science Film Festival, and will end on a high on Saturday night with the Planet Ocean and UCD Imagine Science Films Awards screening, taking place at the Light House Cinema at 8pm.

Friday’s The Future of Film & Video event is free of charge, but tickets must be booked beforehand by clicking here. The event is open to anyone who would like to explore the world of science through the mediums of film and television. It takes place on Friday July 13 at 6pm at the Science Gallery on Pearse St, Trinity College.
