Disney reaches $1bn in the US… Disney is continuing to lead the US box office, becoming the first studio this year to reach $1bn in box office returns, reports Variety. The studio made the huge amount in just 188 days, a new record for Disney. The studio’s big success this year have been ‘Avengers Assemble’ ($611.1m in the US), ‘Brave’ ($175m) and ‘Beauty and the Beast’ ($47.6m). The success comes despite Disney reporting a $200m first-quarter loss on ‘John Carter’.
Oscar-winner Ernest Borgnine dies age 95…Ernest Borgnine, the oldest living winner of a Best Actor Oscar, has died at the age of 95 in Los Angeles. Borgnine won his Oscar for ‘Marty’ in 1955 before going on to star in classics such as ‘From Here to Eternity,’ ‘The Wild Bunch,’ and ‘The Dirty Dozen’ in a screen career that spanned more than 200 roles.
’The Almost Man’ wins top award at Karlovy Vary… Norwegian film ‘The Almost Man’, from director Martin Lund won the grand prize for film at the Karlovy Vary film festival in the Czech Republic over the weekend. The film’s lead Henrik Rafaelsen also took the Best Actor prize, which he shared with Eryk Lubos for his performance in Polish revenge tale ‘To Kill a Beaver.’ The directing award went to Canadian Rafael Ouellet for ‘Camion’.
