Irish actor Liam Cunningham has been confirmed to star in the special 50th anniversary series of popular BBC sci-fi drama ‘Doctor Who’.

The ‘Game of Thrones’ actor will star in an episode written by English screenwriter Mark Gatiss, whose credits include ‘Doctor Who’ and ‘Sherlock’, according to the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine.

The time-travelling TV show celebrates 50 years on the small screen next year, with a host of guest appearances and newcomers added to the cast for the anniversary celebrations. English actor Matt Smith is currently playing Doctor Who and is the eleventh actor to play the role.

As well as Cunningham, Emmy Award-winning actor David Warner, Jessica Raine (The Woman In Black) and Scottish actor Dougray Scott (Desperate Housewives) will all make guest appearances in the show.

IFTA-winning actor Cunningham will star alongside veteran English actor Warner, who is best known for starring in ‘The Omen’, ‘Star Trek’, and his Emmy-winning performance in ‘Masada’ in a historical episode.

Cunningham was recently confirmed to play a role in another BBC mini-series ‘Merlin’, which is currently shooting season five in Europe.

The Dublin-born actor also recently had a major role as Ser Davos Seaworth in HBO’s fantasy adventure ‘Game of Thrones’, which is due to begin production on series three in Northern Ireland again next month. The series will return to Belfast’s Paint Hall Studios, where seasons one and two were filmed with the support of Northern Ireland Screen.

Cunningham was last seen in ‘Titanic: Blood & Steel’, in which he portrayed ‘Big’ Jim Larkin in the epic three-part series with Chris Noth (The Good Wife) and Neve Campbell (Scream).

Series seven of ‘Doctor Who’ is currently in production since February 2012. Cunningham’s episode will air on BBC One in 2013.

New series The Wild Gardener continues this Friday, Nov 26th on BBC Two at 8pm
