27 Jun 2012 : By Steve Cummins
Academy Award-winner Anil Kokaram, BAFTA award-winning producer and director Mark Jacobs (Jesse’s Story) and Simon Robinson, founder and chief scientist of visual effects house The Foundry, will appear at next month’s UCD Imagine Science Film Festival, which takes place in Dublin over July 5-14.

The trio will take part in a panel discussion on ‘The Future of Film & Video’ at the Science Gallery on July 13 to discuss the future of film and television, from 3D tech, to tomorrow’s innovations in the industry.

The discussion on July 13 will be moderated by Stephen Price, who has worked in broadcasting since the 1980s, as a producer for BBC radio and television then as Head of Speech programming at Today FM. He now contributes to arts, historical and current affairs programming and is a media columnist for the Sunday Times.

Trinity College Professor Anil Kokaram won his Oscar in 2009 for his work as a consultant with The Foundry, who are one of the world’s most well recognized houses in the creation of visual effects software. Professor Kokaram helped the firm develop video editing software for the post-production industry.

Next month’s inaugural UCD Imagine Science Film Festival is held in collaboration with New York’s Imagine Science Film Festival. The event will host a number of filmmakers alongside celebrated scientists and critical thinkers and aims to give the public an exciting way to access scientific issues through a line-up of films, shorts, animations and discussions.

Other highlights include an appearance by Spanish director Luis Piedrahita and his screenwriting partner Rodrigo Sopena. Among the films set to be screened include the Irish premiere of Sopena and Piedrahita’s feature film thriller ‘Fermat’s Room’ on July 5, while the festival will close with the European premiere of French director Yann Arthus –Bertrand’s ‘Planet Ocean’

The festival will also host the Irish premiere of actor Jeff Goldblum’s ‘The Race for the Double Helix’, which will also feature a discussion with American molecular biologist, geneticist, zoologist and Nobel Prize winner James Watson; and the Irish premiere of ‘The Creator’, a film by Al Holmes and Al Taylor on visionary scientist Alan Turing.

Scientist and filmmaker Prof Luis Nieto will also look at the influence of pioneers in motion pictures on contemporary science films. Nieto made the 2009 documentary ‘Capucine’, which looked at an experimental protocol on animal communication in Japan and taught cinematographic language to a monkey named Capucine.

Venues the festival will use include The Light House Cinema, The Sugar Club, the Science Gallery and The Factory. A screening of Andrei Tarkovsky’s ‘Solaris’ will also be held at Meeting House Square.
