Multi award-winning director Ian Power’s debut feature film ‘The Runway’ has been picked up for a US release by Robert De Niro’s media company Tribeca Enterprises.

The New York-based distribution company, which is affiliated with the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival, signed a deal with Dublin’s Fastnet Films this month for a theatrical US release this summer, which will be followed by a video on demand output in North America.

‘The Runway’ is loosely based on the true story of a South American pilot who came into difficulty while landing in Mallow in Co. Cork in 1983. The film charts the progress of the local town, and particularly a young boy named Paco, who helped build a runway to get the pilot home.

Ian Power wrote and directed the feature, which picked up its first Best Feature Film award at the Galway Film Fleadh in 2010, and went to win an additional 14 awards worldwide, including two IFTA’s for Best Cinematography and Best Production Design, and the Best Nordic Children’s Film award at the Buster International Children’s Film Festival, all in 2011.

Macdara Kelleher of Fastnet produced the feature with Power. ‘Game of Thrones’ alumni PJ Dillon was the cinematographer. James Cosmo (Game of Thrones), Kerry Condon (The Shore) and Oscar-nominee Demiàn Bichir (A Better Life) all star.

Kelleher said Fastnet was “very happy” to have Tribeca on board, while Power expressed his delight at the distribution deal, declaring it was “terrific news”. He went on to say his debut feature “has had this kind of surprising momentum since its release. Geoff Gilmore at Tribeca has been a great champion of the film since the first screening so they feel like the perfect home for our North American launch”.

De Niro launched Tribeca Enterprises in 2003 with film producer Jane Rosenthal (The Good Shepherd) and her real estate investor husband Craig Hatkoff.

Power will participate in a writer’s panel for IFTA’s inaugural John Ford Ireland Film Symposium alongside screenwriters Pat McCabe, Colin Bateman and Eoghan Harris on Saturday June 9 at the IFI. For more details on the John Ford Ireland Film Symposium click here.
