Production on Scéal Short Films Hits Halfway Stage
23 May 2012 : By Steve Cummins
Production on six Irish-language short films chosen as part of the TG4 and BAI Scéal short film initiative has reached the halfway stage with filming on three of the 25-minute short films now complete.

‘Sodar,’ ‘Artó’ and ‘An Gadaí’ have all wrapped filming with production on the fourth short ‘Síle’ having got underway yesterday (May 22). The final two shorts, ‘Páirtnéir’ and ‘Eoinín’ will begin production on May 28 and June 4 respectively.

Acclaimed Irish cinematographers Ciaran Tanham, Suzie Lavelle, Brian Shanley, Réamonn Mac Donncha, Fergal O Hanlon and Ken Byrne are working with the six new directors and writers to assist them and add their considerable talents.

Funded by BAI, TG4 and Gréasán na Meán, the Scéal Short Film initiative gives talented Irish-speaking writers and directors the opportunity to develop their script form concept stage to broadcast. The shorts are produced by Síol Scéal Productions.

‘Sodar’ was shot at the start of this month and is directed by Brendan Murray from a script by Marion Ní Loingsigh. It features Ciarán Tanham (RAW) as the director of photography. Eamonn Draper (Jack Taylor: The Pikemen), Stephen D’Arcy (The Tudors) and Tara Breathnach (Ros na Rún) all star in the short.

New director Luke Mc Manus helmed ‘Artó’ with Suzie Lavelle (The Other Side of Sleep) as the director of photography. Manchan Magan wrote the script. Owen Mc Donnell (Singlehanded), Kelly Gough (RAW), Aoife Nic Ardghail (Seacht) and Lochlann Ó Mearáin (Ros na Rún) are among the cast.

Last Friday (May 18), director of photography Brian Shanley (Love’s Unfolding Dream) and new director Niall Fallon wrapped filming on ‘An Gadaí’ from Medb Johnstone’s script. All three shorts are now in post-production.

Cinematographer Réamonn Mac Donncha (Ar Ancaire) is currently working with director Cathal Ó Cuaig and writer Séamus Moran on ‘Síle,’ with Fergal O’Hanlon (Anton) and Ken Byrne (Some Mothers Son) set to begin shooting with new directors Colm Bairéad and Tom Ó Suilleabháin, respectively, on the final two shorts ‘Páirtnéir’ and ‘Eoinín.’ ‘Páirtnéir’ was written by Ann Marie Flanagan and ‘Eoinín’ was written by Seán T Ó Meallaigh.

All six shorts are being filmed on-location in An Spidéal and Galway city. Síol Scéal Productions is a training provider with Ciarán Ó Cofaigh producing.

Other key crew working across all six shorts are line producer Christine O Connor; production manager Lisa Ní Ghairbhín; production co-ordinator Cathy Mulligan; location manager Declan O Toole; production designer Mags Linanne; sound mixer Padraig Ó Mainín; costume designer Geraldine Maher; script supervisor David Moran and lighting by Daithí Ó Mainín.

The editors on the shorts are Seán Ó Caollaí, David O Brien, Ronnie Quinlan, John Paul Shortt and Breege Rowley. All six shorts will be broadcast this autumn on TG4.

The Scéal Short Film initiative will shortly be inviting applications from both writers and directors for Scéal 2013. Details will appear on IFTN in the coming weeks.
