Daily Bite: Sheridan’s Jury Opt for ‘War Witch’ At Tribeca
30 Apr 2012 : By Steve Cummins
War Witch
Today’s Daily Bite features news on the big winners at Tribeca, the announcement that China is to build a €1bn film hub for co-productions involving foreign productions and the latest ‘Prometheus’ featurette.

Top prizes awarded at Tribeca… The Tribeca Film Festival came to a close last night (April 29) with director Kim Nguyen’s ‘War Witch’ picking up the best narrative feature award in a category which boasted Dublin director Jim Sheridan among its juror members. The feature, about a kidnapped African girl who becomes a child soldier, also saw its star, Rachel Mwanza named best actress. The best actor award was shared between Dariel Arrechada and Javier Núñez Florián, both of whom were leads in ‘Una Noche,’ a film about Cuban teenagers who dream of fleeing Havana for Miami. The film’s director, Lucy Mulloy was also named best new narrative director for the film. Other winners included ‘All In’ (best screenplay) and ‘The World Before Her’ (best documentary feature).

China to build €1bn film hub…. Chinese entrepreneur Bruno Wu is planning to build a €1bn ($1.27bn) film and media hub in the Chinese city of Tianjin, according to Variety. The base is aimed at providing a hub for co-production involving the US and other foreign productions. Some 35 per cent of the investment is earmarked for film financing. The initial build, comprising 377,000 square feet of offices, is nearing completion and will open in October.

Apple in talks with Epix over TV content…. Apple is in talks to stream movies from the studios that own the Epix cable channel, according to Reuters. Epix has an exclusive streaming agreement with Netflix until September. Epix is owned by Lions Gate Entertainment Corp., Viacom Inc.'s Paramount Pictures and MGM. Apple is hoping to tie up the deal ahead of the launch of its much-anticipated TV set.

If you watch one trailer today… With excitement building ahead of its release next month, here’s a featurette from the set of ‘Prometheus’.
