Limerick IT Students Dominate Dare2BDrinkAware.ie Film and Media Awards

Limerick Institute of Technology dominated the fifth film and multimedia Dare2BDrinkAware.ie awards ceremony in Dublin last Thursday (April 19), picking up three awards in both the film and multimedia categories.

Short film ‘The House Party’ won Best Overall Film at the event, which is open to third-level students across Ireland. The film was submitted by Peter Maloney, Louise McCormack and James Skerritt of Streal Productions for Limerick Institute of Technology, and was awarded €1,000.

This year the annual Dare2BDrinkAware.ie competition invited applicants to submit projects which explored the theme ‘drinking in a home environment’. The event is in association with the Digital Hub Development Agency.

Fionnuala Sheehan, Chief Executive of drinkaware.ie, said of the home-based theme, “We wanted to choose a theme that really resonated with students, and that offered them plenty of scope to be innovative and creative. We are used to seeing alcohol awareness campaigns that revolve around goings-on in pubs or nightclubs. But home drinking now constitutes more than 50 per cent of alcohol consumption in Ireland.”

The Runner-Up Film on the night, ‘Behind Closed Doors’, was submitted by IADT student Philip Blake and was awarded €500.

An online public vote chose ‘Pre Drink? Precaution’ for the People’s Choice Film award. It was produced by Shifts, which is comprised of students from UCD, DCU and St. Patrick’s College in Drumcondra.

Other winners on the night came from multimedia categories, with Limerick Institute of Technology students winning the People’s Choice vote for ‘Booze Tracker’, as well as winning €500 in the Joint Winners in the Multimedia category for ‘How Drunk Are You?’. Students from the Cavan Institute won in the same category, with ‘Home Party Quiz’.

RTÉ broadcaster John Kelly chaired a panel discussion with Paddy Cosgrave and David Kerr after the awards ceremony. Both men discussed their own careers in the media industry and offered advice on how to break into the film and multimedia industries.
