IFTA Award-winning documentary ‘1916 Seachtar na Cásca’ is screening all over New York this Easter week in conjunction with the anniversary of 1916 events.

Abú Media, along with Údarás na Gaeltachta and the Irish Consulate Office in New York, are holding a series of screenings which started 10 April and will continue until Saturday 14 April. Screenings will be held at the New York Irish Centre on Friday 13 April and the Irish American Heritage Museum in Albany on Saturday 14 April.

Previous screenings were located at the New York University Glucksman House, followed by a screening at the Irish American Society of Nassau, Suffolk and Queens on 11 April, and the Consulate General Offices on 12 April.

‘1916 Seachtar na Cásca’ is a 7-part series profiling each of the seven signatories of the 1916 Proclamation of the Irish Republic which first aired on TG4 in September 2010.

The script for the hour-long episodes was written by Aindrias Ó Cathasaigh and the series was directed by Daithai Keane (Mobs Canada). Pierce Boyd produced the documentary with Abú Media for TG4. Irish actor Brendan Gleeson narrated the documentary, with Ronan Browne (Gangs of New York) composing the score. The project was jointly funded by TG4 and the BAI through its Sound and Vision scheme.

One episode of the series will be screened each night in a different venue in New York, followed by a Q&A session.

Producer Pierce Boyd expressed his delight at screening the award-winning documentary overseas: “This is a huge honour and opportunity for us to showcase our work to the Irish American community in New York and we are very grateful to Údarás na Gaeltachta and The Irish Consular office in New York for facilitating us in our endeavours.”

He continued: “Irish America was very influential in the Rising itself so it’s only fitting really that we bring it out to celebrate it with them during Easter.”

Abú Media is currently in pre-production on a follow up series which will again be funded by both TG4 and the BAI, which is due to air on TG4 next year. Production on this series will begin in May. It will focus on the other seven men who were executed in Kilmainham Gaol along with the seven signatories featured in ‘1916 Seachtar na Cásca’.

1916 Seachtar na Cásca’ will be available to purchase on DVD in September of this year in both English and Irish.
