The German-Irish production ‘Death of a Superhero’ has won its fourth international award. It received the Audience Award and ‘Special Mention’ of the Jury at the Mamer-en-Mars European Film Festival last week.
Following successful rounds on the festival circuit, the drama has already scooped the Audience Choice Prize and Young Jury Prize at Les Arcs European Film Festival, and the Special Jury Award for actress Aisling Loftus during JDIFF.
‘Death of a Superhero’ tells the story of a 15 year-old boy who draws comic book stories about an invincible superhero as he struggles to come to terms with his own terminal illness.
Anthony McCarten wrote the film and Ian Fitzgibbon (Perrier’s Bounty) directed. ‘Lord of the Rings’ star Andy Serkis stars alongside Irish actor Michael McElhatton (Parked) as well as Aisling Loftus (Dive), Thomas Brodie Sangster (Nowhere Boy) and Jessica Schwarz (Perfume).
‘Death of a Superhero’ is a co-production between Ireland’s Grand Pictures and Germany’s Bavaria Pictures. The Irish Film Board co-funded the project with a number of German investors, including the German Federal Film Board.
The film will screen at the Young People’s Festival in Leeds on 3 April and the International Filmfest in Istanbul on 8 April. Its US premiere is set for the Tribeca Film festival later this month, followed by its Irish release later this year.
