Stephen Gamble
IFTN and the Irish film and television industry were saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Stephen Gamble, who was well-known in the broadcast and post production world in Ireland and passed away suddenly last month.

Stephen worked with Tyrell CCT, technology solutions provider for the broadcast and post production sector, for more than seven years.

His former colleagues Stuart Lawn and Bryan Malone wrote this tribute for IFTN.

In Memory of Stephen Gamble – RIP (12.3.2012)

Stephen Gamble our ex-colleague and friend passed away on Monday March 12, 2012. It was a complete shock which has stunned everyone in our industry. His untimely death in the summer of his life has left a deep sadness for so many people who knew and worked with him- and of course none greater than for his wife Miriam and two little boys Evan and Cuan.

Although we had already been in business for a few years, it seemed like the Tyrell technical department truly began the day Stephen Gamble started work with us and to where he gave his unflinching commitment for the next seven years.

At his interview he regaled us with stories of working under pressure in the AV industry and the time he incurred the wrath of the CIA but ultimately saved the day by fixing President Bush's microphone at an outside broadcast when he visited Ireland.

He always had that calm but confident, amiable and bright presence that made everyone around him immediately feel at ease. His thirst for knowledge was prestigious and once he acquired it, (which he always did with top marks as he never got less than 90 per cent in any of his Tech exams and regularly got over 95 per cent), he was never precious with it as countless runners, tape ops, editors and engineers will testify. He was always the first on the scene at any issue and would stick with it until the problem was solved and everyone in the room was happy and better informed.

He was a true geek and the world was a better place for that. He loved technology and had a way of “talking to machines”" that verged on the holy. Steve would have either installed, upgraded or fixed the majority of systems in Ireland, whether that was PC, Mac, Video or Audio - it didn't matter as he was capable of fixing it all.

It was Macs though that were his first love and he personally created and ran the Apple Service Centre in Tyrell. It was such a success that within three months he won the trophy from Apple for the best service centre, beating long established outfits in the UK.

Stephen's other passions included Ice Hockey and in his altruistic style he set up a team for underprivileged kids to learn skating and team skills and got sponsorships from a number of corporations to buy the equipment and clothing. He never flaunted his 'good deeds' or bragged about the extra-curricular activities he was involved in but every once in a while he would make a chance remark and out would tumble some amazing stories about the events he had managed to organize.

In the last year Stephen moved on from Tyrell to new pastures and joined the engineering team at Windmill Lane. Here he was beginning to flourish yet again and become deeply involved in the day-to- day business of keeping a dynamic post facility at 100 per cent technical capacity.

Even in the relatively short time he was there he implemented new storage architecture and upgraded the audio facilities to accommodate an increase in feature film work. Again, all this driven by a desire to accelerate his understanding and improve his skills across a wide range of digital media.

Stephen was always very proud of his family, both in Canada and Ireland. His roots in Canada were very strong and it was there that he went to college and studied Film and TV which eventually lead him back to Ireland to seek work in our industry. His family life was very important to him and he was so happy to have met and married Miriam and become a father to his "little dudes" as he called them.

We were both at his wedding reception and although he didn't have trophy winning dance moves, he definitely could pull a crowd, create a circle and get everyone smiling and moving in his own funny way, and we will always remember him for that.

We extend our heartfelt sympathy to Miriam, Evan, Cuan, Stephen's parents and sisters - our thoughts and prayers are with them all at this sad time. Stephen, you will be sadly missed personally and professionally. Rewire the heavens in peace dude!

Stuart Lawn and Bryan Malone.
