Irish feature ‘Songs for Amy’ returns to Galway for Film Fleadh
04 Apr 2012 : By Eva Hall
Songs for Amy
Irish feature film ‘Songs for Amy’ has been officially selected for the Galway Film Fleadh in July this year. Making its Irish debut, the comedic love story follows musician Sean O’Malley, played by Sean Maguire (Meet the Spartans), who writes an album in the hopes of impressing the girl he loves.

‘Songs for Amy’ (previously ‘Seven Songs for Amy’) is set in the west of Ireland and New York, and was filmed in Galway last summer and in New York late last year.

It was directed by BAFTA and Emmy-nominated Konrad Begg (Top Gear) and produced by Fiona Graham with Sonny and Skye Productions and Seafaring films. ‘Songs for Amy’ hosts an impressive cast, with James Cosmo (Sons of Anarchy), Sean Maguire and Lorna Anderson (River City) starring, while Gavin Mitchell (You Instead) and Patrick Bergin (Sleeping with the Enemy) co-star.

An array of musicians feature on the film’s soundtrack, such as Irish singer-songwriter Ultan Conlon, country-rock band Alabama 3 and actor Patrick Bergin.

Writer and producer Fiona Graham expressed her delight at the feature being officially selected for Galway, saying: “Galway is a character in the film. Its culture and its beauty are woven into the story. The Galway Film Fleadh was where we all wanted to showcase it and the cast and crew are extremely excited about coming back to Galway and Kinvara.” Graham added “It’s great to be recognized, I think Galway is one of the best festival’s out there.”

‘Songs for Amy’ has also been officially selected for California’s Newport Beach Film Festival where it will make its official premiere on 1 May. The Newport Beach Festival showcases both studio and independent films, and previously held premieres of box-office hits such as ‘Crash’ and ‘Layer Cake’.

Director Begg said of the film’s selection at Newport: “In today’s world where non commercial, grass roots music is flourishing and the art of writing a song is celebrated, I think it’s fantastic that a film like ours has been selected in the ‘Spotlight on Music’ category. I can’t wait to see what response we get from American audiences.”

The Galway Film Fleadh starts on Tuesday 10 July and runs until Sunday 15 July. The festival’s deadlines for calls for feature films, short films and pitching award are fast approaching. To find out more log onto www.galwayfilmfleadh.com.
