The nominees for the 69th Annual Golden Globes have been announced with Michael Fassbender, Brendan Gleeson shortlisted in the acting categories, and nominations for Irish feature ‘Albert Nobbs’ and Irish filmed drama ‘Game of Thrones’.
Revealed at a press conference in Los Angeles, the Hollywood Foreign Press have nominated Irish actor Michael Fassbender in the Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama category alongside Hollywood heavyweights George Clooney, Leonardo Di Caprio, Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt. Fassender receives the nod for his acclaimed performance in Steve McQueen’s ‘Shame’ which has already earned the ‘Hunger’ actor awards at the BIFAs and Venice Film Festival.
Brendan Gleeson receives his third career Golden Globe nomination for his hilarious performance in John Michael McDonagh’s ‘The Guard’ in the Actor in a Comedy or Musical category. Ryan Gosling appears again in this shortlist with Owen Wilson (Midnight in Paris), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (50/50), and Jean Dujardin (The Artist).
Elsewhere in the shortlist, IFTA winning Irish composer Brian Byrne (Zonad, The Good Doctor) is shortlisted with his writing partner Glenn Close in the Best Original Song – Motion Picture category. Byrne penned the music for ‘Lay Your Head Down’ featured in the Irish film ‘Albert Nobbs’ with Close writing the lyrics & Sinead O'Connor on vocals. Close also receives a nomination in the Lead Actress Drama category for her striking performance in the film which sees the actress pose as a man to find work in 19th century Ireland. Actress Janet McTeer who plays Hubert Page in the story has been shortlisted by the HFPA for her supporting role.
Fans of the HBO Drama ‘Game of Thrones’ will be delighted to learn the series, filmed on location in Northern Ireland, will vie for the Best TV series Drama Globe alongside ‘American Horror Story’, ‘Boardwalk Empire’, ‘Boss’ and ‘Homeland’.
Commenting on the news James Hickey, Chief Executive of Bord Scannán na hÉireann / Irish Film Board (IFB) said “We are delighted to see the wide range of nominations which showcase Ireland on the international stage, underlining Ireland’s reputation as a cultural hub. Funding from Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board is key for projects such as The Guard and Albert Nobbs to be produced in Ireland, creating opportunities for Irish talent to work on these projects."
Leading the overall nominations is Weinstein Company’s silent movie ‘The Artist’ with six nominations, followed by Alexander Payne’s comedy ‘The Descendants’ and ‘The Help’. The Awards will be presented at a ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday 15th of January 2012.
