'Even Gods' Takes Irish Honours at Cork, Festival Winners announced

With the closing of the 56th Corona Cork Film festival came the announcement of the winners in the best short competitions. With eight categories and over 90 short films to choose from, this year’s Corona Cork Film Festival, saw an array of talent in the short categories from across the globe. Best International Short Film went to ‘Aglaée’, a french film directed by Rudi Rosenberg, about a boy called Benoît, who loses a schoolyard bet in which he must ask out Aglaée.
The 19 minute short impressed the judges with “its progressive depiction of disability in a non-apologetic and integrated manner.” The character of Aglaée offers a vision of a self-assured young woman who is fully capable of making her own choices.

‘Even Gods’ by Phil Harrison came out on top with two wins at the festival, one in the Best Irish Short Film category and the other for the Audience Award. 'Even Gods' tells a very human story about the power of reconciliation, distinguished by a trio of sublime performances, and showcases Phil Harrison as an exciting new voice in Irish cinema.

The Audience Award for Best International Short Film went to ‘Silent River’, a Romanian film set in 1986 which tells the story of Gregor and Vali, who want to get away but both need each other and yet there is mutual distrust. One night Gregor finds his doubts confirmed.

Cork Short Film Nominee for the European Film Awards went to ‘Two Hearts’ directed by Darren Thornton. A story about a woman called Lorna, who has tried to stay on the right track but when a man from her past is released from prison, her life begins to spiral out of control. The international jury consisted of Romanian film lecturer Andrei Gorzo, a German feature film script writer and member of the sales department of Kurzfilm Agentur Hamburg Alexandra Heneka and a Manchester based artist Qasim Riza Shaheen (England).

The Claire Lynch Award for Best First-Time Irish Director of a Short Film went to Paul McNulty for ‘The Art Of Making Friends’, which explores the bond between an artist and his creations and told with humour and joy. The National jury for the prize consisted of Cork-based Irish artist Tom Climent, Alexandra Gramatke,Managing Director of the Kurzfilm Agentur distributors in Hamburg and Felim Mac Dermott lecturer in film and television in GMIT.

Mike Hannon’s ‘Rat’s Island’ took home the ‘Made In Cork’ Award for Best Short Film. Hannon's short portrays of a man dispossessed from society, who lives in a shack on the edge of a lake by a busy road. On the ‘Made in Cork’ jury were former Green Party TD and musician Dan Boyle, Trish Brennan, Head of Fine Arts in Crawford College Cork and Margaret Greene, general manager of the Gate Cinema group.

Award of the Festival for Best Short Film went to ‘The Wind Is Blowing On My Street’, which tells the story of a girl in Tehran who is locked out of her house without a scarf on her head. ‘I Don't Want To Go Back Alone (Eu Não Quero Voltar Sozinho)’ by Daniel Ribeiro of Brazil won the OutLook Award for Best LGBT Short Film. Ribeiro's film tells a beautiful and original story about young gay romance.

Special mentions also went to ‘Woman Waiting’ and ‘Soul Catcher’ in the International Short category. ‘Brother (Dearthair)’ by Joan Mary McCarthy got a special mention from judges in the ‘Made in Cork’ category and ‘Quarantine’, by Tadhg O’Sullivan and Fergal Ward, a documentary which observes a woman in isolation undergoing radiation treatment, got special mention in the Best Irish Short category, which is “rich in its casual humanity.”
