Elephant Eye Films has closed several distribution deals for documentary ‘Swell Season’. The documentary about musical duo Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, has sold to Germany, Switzerland and Austria (StudioCanal), Australia (Icon), Korea (Jin Jin), and Canada (Mongrel).
Produced by Elkcreek Cinema, directors Nick August-Perna, Chris Dapkins and Carlo Mirabella-Davis, follow on from the Oscar winning ‘Once’, telling the story of the duo's stagnating romance and also examines Hansard's response to his new hard-earned fame, contrasting it with Irglová's overnight success.
Hansard and Irglová's film collaboration and make-believe romance eventually developed into a more formal collaboration and real-life romance, with the folk rock couple recording three well-received albums as The Swell Season. However, following their Academy Award victory and subsequent touring, the pair grew apart.
After making the rounds at the Tribeca Film Festival and elsewhere earlier this year, the film is now on release in the US via Seven Arts releasing, and sales negotiations are underway in other major territories.
Elephant Eye Partner David Robinson said, “We are extremely pleased with the strong international partners who have come on board to release these films. We are lucky that in the midst of a tough international climate, our partners continue to support important, thoughtful art house films.”
