MGM Studios has agreed a multi-year licensing agreement with Netflix, to stream its feature films in Ireland and the UK. The multi-year licensing agreement will make Netflix the exclusive subscription streaming service for many first-run films from MGM.
The Deal will see MGM titles available for Netflix members in Ireland to watch instantly in the pay TV window on televisions, tablets, game consoles, computers and mobile phones.
Upcoming MGM titles such as ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’, ‘Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters’, and ‘21 Jump Street’, will all be available exclusively on Netflix within one year of their theatrical release. Catalog titles such as ‘Capote’, ‘Fargo’, ‘The Usual Suspects’, ‘West Side Story’ and ‘The Amityville Horror’ will also be available on the service.
Netflix announced formally last month that it would be launching its service in the U.K. and Ireland in early 2012 after Variety revealed the news this summer.
“We are delighted to be entering the UK and Ireland with a legendary studio like MGM at our side,” said Ted Sarandos, Netflix chief content officer.
“And we are excited to be extending our relationship with MGM from the U.S. to these important markets and proud to be the exclusive home for their films in the traditional Pay TV window”.
Distributors Lionsgate U.K. and Alliance Pictures' Brit arm Momentum Pictures have also signed up to the service, making a selection of their titles available exclusively during the pay TV window. Further content agreements with studios will likely be announced as the release date for Netflix in the UK and Ireland approaches.
