After garnering rave reviews during the Toronto International Film Festival, Irish film ‘Death of a Superhero’ has secured a US distribution deal with Tribeca Enterprises, and Pasatiempo Pictures in Latin America.
According to producer Michael Garland, the film should have its US premiere at the Tribeca festival in April; “We are thrilled, it’s great to get a US release for an Irish indie movie. Hopefully this will open it up to further territories.”
Directed by Ian Fitzgibbon (Perrier's Bounty, Spin the Bottle), ‘Death of a Superhero’ uses a mix of live action and animation, to tell the story of terminally ill teenager Donald Clarke, who escapes life to his illustrated comic adventures.
Filmed on location in Dublin and Wicklow, the feature is based on the novel by internationally acclaimed author Anthony McCarten, who also wrote the screenplay.
‘Death of a Superhero’ was produced by Grand Pictures in Dublin and Bavaria Pictures in Germany and part funded by the Irish Film Board. The film stars Andy Serkis (The Rise of the Planet of the Apes, The Lord of the Rings) Thomas Brodie-Sangster (Love Actually, Nowhere Boy), Michael McElhatton (Intermission, Adam & Paul, I Went Down) and Sharon Horgan (Pulling).
Following its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival critics on Variety wrote "FitzGibbon has achieved something special," whilst Screen Daily wrote "impressive cast and moving storyline… Serkis and Brodie Sangster form a convincing and subtle bond."
