Derry is set to host the 33rd Celtic Media Festival. The annual festival showcases some of the best productions in broadcast and film from the Celtic Nations. The three day event will take place in Derry’s Playhouse Theatre from 18th – 20th of April 2012.
Chairman of the Celtic Media Festival, Dňmhnall Caimbeul commented on the decision to host the event in the NI city saying: “Derry has a rich and vibrant cultural heritage and with the eyes of the world beginning to turn to the city in the run up to its year as City of Culture on 2013, there is a tremendous sense of creative energy emanating from the region. I know our delegates will look forward to exploring all that Derry has to offer.”
Award winning actor, writer and director Peter Mullan (The Magdalene Sisters) was among the contributors at the 32nd festival in Stornoway, Scotland this year. Other guests at previous festivals include Cartoon Saloon’s Tomm Moore, actress Tilda Swinton (We need to talk About Kevin), British filmmaker Ken Loach (The Wind that Shakes the Barley) and Irish actor Stephen Rea (Stella Days).
One of the main highlights, the Bronze Torc Awards closes the festival each year. At the 2011 event Firebrand Productions won the Best Education category for ‘Teens in the Wild’ and Wildfire Films ‘Deep End Dance’ won best drama for RTE. TG4 took home three Torcs including the best factual feature for ‘The Pipe’. Fastnet Films ‘The Runway’ won Best Feature Length Drama.
