Author of the Thrones book series George R.R. Martin has announced on his blog that
Gwendoline Christie has been cast in the role of Brienne, the Blue Knight.
Brienne Tarth is the only daughter and heiress of Lord Selwyn Tarth of Evenfall Hall who is larger and stronger than most men and longs to be a knight. Her character is described as having an awkward personality but is also honest and stubborn. She serves the late king’s brother Renly and is a skilled swordswomen. Her character is mocked for her large stature and apparent ugliness with knights insulting her by calling her “Brienne the Beauty”.
Previous roles for the 6'2" actress include a small part in ‘The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus’. This is the second new addition to be added to the ‘Game of Thrones’ Season Two cast with English actress Natalie Dormer (The Tudors) having landed the role of Margaery Tyrell, a beautiful young women from the House Tyrell who is pledged to marry Renly Baratheon (Gethin Anthony), the late King Robert’s brother. The Second series of the HBO epic will beginning filming in Belfast Paint Hall Studios and in locations in Northern Ireland in late July.
