Irish Cinema Industry Launches Alternative Anti-Piracy Campaign
15 Jun 2011 :
You Make The Movies - Lord of the Rings
You Make the Movies campaign is a new pro copyright initiative from the Industry Trust for Intellectual Property Awareness. Taking a different tack than the heavy anti-piracy ads that come on screen pre film, this campaign is a massive thank-you to the public who support the cinema industry.

Addressing one of the most critical issues in the content industry today in a positive way, the campaign aims to thank the public on behalf of the 18,000 people employed in Irish film industry. The You Make the Movies initiative hopes that by acknowledging the public contribution to the cinema industry, people will continue to show their support by buying cinema tickets, authentic DVDs and authentic downloads. Mark Doherty of The Independent Cinema Association of Ireland reinforced the sentiment of the campaign by telling audiences ”We all depend on you! Every time you buy a cinema ticket you help to keep our industry alive. Thank You.”

Representatives from the Irish film industry have come out to voice support for the campaign including vice president and General Manager of Disney Ireland Trish Long: “The campaign is unique in that it involves various sectors of the industry working together to recognise the importance of protecting creative ideas & in helping secure the livelihoods of approx 18,000 people who work in the film & entertainment industry throughout Ireland.” Country Manager Ireland of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Tom Byrne also said that Sony were “greatly encouraged by the positive message of this campaign.” Commenting on his sector of the industry, Tom said “The home entertainment side of the business is a key contributor to the total revenue of a film and it directly employs over 2,000 people in retail stores around Ireland.”

The campaign, is a multi-platform cinema and outdoor campaign with a media value in excess of €500,000. It features pro copyright outdoor advertisements and trailers which encourage the public to promote and protect creative rights of filmmakers.

Actress and author Amy Huberman is in full support of the campaign, “Illegal downloads and piracy are killing the film industry. If you love the cinema, keep supporting the real industry and pay for the movies that you want to see. Pirated DVD's contribute to criminal cartels involved in pornography, drug dealing and people trafficking and illegal downloads will simply reduce the number of good films it will be possible to make and for you to see as they take money directly from the film makers' pockets. Help us to protect film making in Ireland so we can all enjoy the films we want to see!"

The ads, directed by UK helmer Steve Bendelack (Mr Bean’s Vacation, The League of Gentlemen’s Apocalypse) show the public recreating some of the most famous film moments in history, including ‘Lord of The Rings’, ‘Jaws’ and ‘The Life of Brian’. It also features submissions from the public recreating their own favourite film moments.

For your viewing pleasure, we've got 'The Life of Brian' hosted in our Trailers section. Or to view all the ads and video clips, and for more information on the campaign, check out www.youmakethemovies.ie.
