Still Films’ self distributed new feature doc, ‘Build Something Modern’ will open in the IFI on Friday, May 27th running until Tuesday, May 31st. The project, directed by Nicky Gogan (producer, Rialto Twirlers) and Paul Rowley (Seaview) and produced by Maya Derrington (Pyjama Girls), tells the story of Ireland's Modernist Mission in Africa. The project has also been chosen to screen at this year’s Sheffield Doc/Fest this June.
The feature doc shot in Dublin in July 2010 having been commissioned by the Irish Arts Council and the Dublin International Film Festival. It explores the strange phenomenon of Irish architects exporting hundreds of modernist designs for structures to be built in Africa in the early 1960’s. The film's premiere at the IFI for the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival sold out in February and it was recently invited to screen the Sheffield Doc/Fest being held in June.
The ‘Build Something Modern’ screenings will take place daily at 7.30pm from Friday, May 27th to Thursday, June 2nd. Tickets are available via the IFI Box-office or by calling 01 679 3477. Co-director Nicky Gogan and Researcher Dr. Lisa Godson will be present Friday 27th May to take part in a Q&A session following the doc’s screening. The doc was funded by the JDIFF/ Arts Council Reel Arts scheme in 2010.
Director, Nicky Gogan tells IFTN the hope is Still Films will distribute ‘Build Something Modern’ to other Irish cinemas in the coming months but the team now plan to concentrate on film festival submissions for the doc.
