16 Irish Titles for the Cannes Market

The Irish Film Board (IFB) has today announced the Irish films that are set to screen at this year’s Cannes Film Market. The projects being shown at the event include Ripple World Pictures’ ‘Parked’; Parallel Films’ ‘Albert Nobbs’ and Fastnet Films’ ‘The Runway. Saturday, May 14th will play host to the annual drinks reception held by the IFB and Culture Ireland.

The Irish films set to screen and sell at Cannes include Element Films’ ‘The Guard’ which is being sold by Metropolis International Sales and is showing on Saturday, May 14th; Magma Films’ ‘Legends of Valhalla – Thor’ which is screening on May 15th and for which the sales agents are Telepool GMBH. These are joined by several other features which do not have confirmed screening times, these include Parallel Films’ Albert Nobbs’ which is being sold by Salt; Fastnet Films’ ‘The Runway’ being represented by 6 Sales and Samson Films’ co-production, ‘Grabbers’.

Finally, Ripple World Pictures’ Parked’ and Rubicon Films’ ‘My Brothers’, are both being represented by The Yellow Affair as well as Samson Films’ co-production ‘The Moth Diaries’ and Octagon Films co-production, ‘The Hideaways’ with Wild Bunch on board as the sales agent for both.

The Irish feature documentaries showing include Ian Palmer’s ‘Knuckle’ which will screen on May 11th and is being sold by Content Media; Transmission Films’ ‘Children of the Revolution’ being shown by sales agents, E2 Films on May 16th and Suin Ni Raghallaigh’s ‘Off the Beaten Track’ which will show on May 17th with Eastwest Filmdistribution overseeing sales. Other Irish feature docs showing include Morgan Bushe’s ‘Silent Sonata’ which is being sold by Wavelength Pictures and Mac Dara O'Curraidhin’s ‘A Boatload of Wild Irish Men’ which is being sold by Wavelength Pictures, neither of which have confirmed screening times as of yet.

The above features will join Irish projects that have been selected for official competition at the Cannes Film Festival; Element Pictures’ co-production ‘This Must be the Place’ has been selected for Cannes’ Official Competition. The film is set to screen on May 20th in the Palais des Festivals and is being sold by Pathé International.

Furthermore, Fastnet Films’ ‘The Other Side of Sleep’ will screen as part of the event’s Official Selection and the film’s producer Rebecca Daly is set to take part in this year’s Directors’ Fortnight event. The sales agents for the feature are Momento Films International and it is screening once May 13th and twice on May 14th. Rubicon Films' Rebecca O’Flanagan is one of 25 filmmakers chosen to take part in the events Producers on the Move programme running from May 14th to 17th. Lynn Ramsay's introspective, 'We Need to Talk About Kevin' is also set to screen at the French festival, the film was lensed by Irish Oscar nominated director of photography, Seamus McGarvey (Atonement).

Culture Ireland and the Irish Film Board will again this year host a special reception to celebrate Irish film talent on Saturday, May 14th. The confirmed list of Irish filmmakers who will be in attendance at Cannes 2011 will be announced in the coming days.
