Mark O'Connor Preps Feature Drama 'Grooskill'
04 Apr 2011 :
Director Mark O'Connor on set
A new feature length drama from ‘Between the Canals’ director, Mark O’Connor will start shooting in July. ‘Grooskill’ will centre around feuding members of the traveller community and the film will shoot for approximately five weeks. O’Connor’s ‘Between the Canals’ is continuing its growing theatrical release having opened at Movies@ in Dundrum recently.

‘Grooskill’ producer Cormac Fox tells IFTN that the drama will be “quite Hamlet like” in that it takes the form of both a revenge drama and a love story set amongst the secretive community of two Traveller families in Ireland.

Supported by the BAI’s recent Sound and Vision round, the 90 minute drama will shoot in Ireland in July. It is being produced by Vico Films’ Cormac Fox. Full budget information is TBC but the drama received €250,000 as part of the BAI Sound and Vision fund along with development support from the Irish Film Board.

‘Grooskill’ is written and will be directed by Mark O’Connor and the film will be shot on RED by Dave Grennan (Eamon). The confirmed cast members for the feature drama include Peter Coonan (Love/ Hate) and Michael Collins. Fox tells us that, where casting is concerned, he wants ‘Grooskill’ to be similar to ‘Between the Canals’ in featuring a lot of non-actors in the key roles.

Where O’Connor’s ‘Between the Canals’ is concerned, the film has been going from strength to strength recently. Initially opening just at the IFI, the feature took €3,400 at the box office and sold out all of its screenings.

The film was also subject to much praise from Irish critics with the Irish Times calling it “A rough-hewn, energetic urban thriller to woo us back into the picture house," and the Irish Independent lauding the “entirely fresh and original take on Dublin gangsters."

As such, the film had a further release in Liffey Valley’s Vue Cinema and is currently showing in Movies @Dundrum until Thursday, April 7th. For film times see local press.
