It has been announced that the HBO series, ‘In Treatment’ is not to return for a fourth series in its current format. The show, starring Golden Globe winning and Emmy nominated actor Gabriel Byrne centres around psychotherapist, Paul Weston and a release from HBO states that the group has “No plans to continue with In Treatment as previously formatted.”

Irish actor, Gabriel Byrne has won a Golden Globe award along with Emmy, IFTA and Satellite nominations over the years for his lead performance as psychotherapist Paul Weston in the series which has run for three seasons.

‘In Treatment’ is based on an Israeli format which ran for two series. It looks at the life and work of middle aged psychotherapist, Dr. Paul Weston, and his weekly sessions with patients as well as those with his own therapist at the end of the week.

A statement from HBO explains that the series may yet return, noting that: ”It's true that we have no plans to continue with In Treatment as previously formatted, However, we are in continued conversations with the executive producers to find another way to continue telling these rich stories.”

The series marked a return to TV drama for Byrne who made his acting debut in Irish TV series, ‘The Riordans’ and ‘Glenroe’ before he made his move into feature films, starring in celebrated Irish and International films such as ‘The Usual Suspects’, ‘Miller’s Crossing’, ‘End of Days’ and ‘Excalibur’. Byrne was named cultural ambassador for Imagine Ireland earlier this year and recently starred in the thriller, 'I. Anna' alongside Hayley Atwell. The actor has also signed on to star in Brendan Gleeson's feature film take on Flann O'Brien's bestselling novel, 'At Swim Two Birds'.

The third series of the show brought in an average of 279,000 viewers, down from the 446,000 viewers who tuned in to watch the show’s pilot episode. The second series of ‘In Treatment’ will begin its Irish and UK broadcast on April 29th on Sky Atlantic.
