Production on the live-action part of the second series of ‘Roy’ will wrap on Friday, 1 April. The RTS winning series, re-commissioned by BBC will now move into Jam Media’s animation studio for the next eight months.

The second instalment of the series is currently shooting in Beaumont, Co. Dublin with Al Shannon (animator, Give Up Yer Aul Sins) and Simon Gibney (Fair City, Podge & Rodge Show) directing and IFTA winner PJ Dillon (The Runway) on set as the series’ director of photography. Created by Shannon and executive produced by Jam Media’s John Rice (Funky Fables), the series stars Scott Graham (Pentecost) as the voice of Roy alongside Simon Delaney (Zonad), Cathy Belton (Savage) and Mark Lambert (Evelyn).

The second series of the double BAFTA nominated and RTS award winning show is produced by Mark Cumberton (writer, Picme) and the writing team behind this chapter includes Paul Smith (Desperados) as lead writer alongside Declan de Barra, Trevor J. Colgan (The Big Bow Wow), Derek O’Connor and Ian Kearney. The show’s budget is €5 million and it is funded by the BBC along with enhanced acquisition support from RTÉ, presale funding and Section 481.

Talking to IFTN, executive producer John Rice tells us what audiences can look forward to in the second series of ‘Roy’: “With the first series Roy was very much the new boy,” he starts. ”With the second series now we can push him out to the neighbourhood environment. We can also have more visual gags where we’re able to use Roy’s physicality for humorous purposes.”

John also described the process adopted by PJ Dillon in shooting the show, a mixture of animation and live-action: ”It’s an unusual one,”he says. ”We have to shoot the scenes with Scott in situ as Roy so that the other actors’ eyelines look ok.” The live action part of the series has been shooting for the last nine weeks and key posing animation will now start on the series in the Jam Media studios whilst Egg Post Production’s Gráinne Gavigan (Spin the Bottle) and Gary Shortall (The Clinic, Roy Series 1) will commence the show’s editing work at the same time.
