'Song of the Sea' Secures UK & Ireland Distribution Deal

Song of the Sea
The UK and Irish theatrical distribution rights for Cartoon Saloon’s current feature production, ‘Song of the Sea’ have been nabbed by Optimum Releasing. Directed by Tomm Moore (The Secret of Kells) who co-wrote the feature with Will Collins (My Brothers), ‘Song of the Sea’ tells the story of the last Seal Child's journey home.

Optimum Releasing has already worked with the west of Ireland animation house when its Optimum Home Development division orchestrated the DVD release of the Oscar nominated ‘The Secret of Kells’ in October 2010. The groups will work together again for the theatrical release of ‘Song of the Sea’ across Ireland and the UK.

Currently in development, the film’s character designs are by Tomm Moore and the film’s art direction and backgrounds are being carried out by Adrien Merigeau (background designer, The Secret of Kells). ‘Song of the Sea’ sees characters Ben and Saoirse sent to live with Granny in the city following their mother’s disappearance. Their attempts to get back home lead them through a world of fairytale lands from their mother’s folklore tales. Cartoon Saloon reps say the expected release date is 2013.

Speaking with IFTN in April 2010, Tomm Moore spoke about the feature, saying: “The inspiration behind the project are the stories of the Selkies and the fairytales and beliefs that seem to be dying out around the country, lots of stuff that I had researched during the development of ‘The Secret of Kells’ but which did not have a place in that film.”

The feature’s main animation will be carried out by ‘Secret of Kells’ animation supervisor, Fabian Erlinghauser, Sean McCarron (George of the Jungle), Svend Rothmann Bonde (Draw Poker), Alessandra Sorrentino (Skunk Fu!) and Alfredo Cassano (Skunk Fu!). The CG animation, SFX and compositing will be carried out by Digital Graphics Studios in Belgium. In addition, ‘Song of the Sea’s theme music is Kila’s ‘Dee’s Tune’.

‘Song of the Sea’ is to be co-produced by Noerlum Studios (Denmark), Big Farm (Belgium) with post-production and music being completed by Super Productions (France). It received funding from the IFB/BSÉ and the MEDIA programme.
