Dublin Chinese New Year Fest Rings In

This year’s Dublin Chinese New Year Festival will be celebrated with a series of special film screenings and a day of Animation seminars. As part of the upcoming festival a free animation seminar, organised by Dublin City Council animation in China and the legal aspects of Irish/ Chinese co-production.

Celebrated animators from China will join Oscar-nominated companies, Brown Bag Films and Cartoon Saloon amongst others, to participate in the Animation seminar on Friday, 4th February, at Dublin City Council's Wood Quay Conference Centre.

The full list of seminar participants on the day includes Paul Young, Creative Director and founder of Cartoon Saloon; Jennie Stacey and Gillian Higgins from Brown Bag Films; Chinese Animator Jason Leigh from Crystal CG; Yao Guanghua, director of Shanghai Animation Studio, The Magic Aster; Kevin Lynch of Clerkin Lynch Solicitors; Animation director, Jimmy Murakami and Enterprise Ireland’s Cathy Holahan. The day’s proceedings will be chaired by Caboom’s Damien Farrell (Beary Boo).

The seminar will run from 9:30am to 2:00pm on February 4th and will see Damian Farrell hosting an introductory talk entitled ’10 Things you need to know about China’. This will be followed by Paul Young and Jennie Stacey discussing co-production logistics and funding. At 10:35am Gillian Higgins, Jason Leigh and Paul Young will introduce an Outsourcing seminar where they will examine the issues and dangers of outsourcing.

Cathy Holahan, Kevin Lynch, Jimmy Murakami and Jason Leigh will discuss Doing Business in China at 11:40am which will be followed by a final session entitled Animation in China with panelists in the shape of Yao Guanghua, Jimmy Murakami and Jason Leigh.

The Dublin Chinese New Year Festival runs from 1st to 14th February. The IFI, UCC and Galway’s Town Hall Theatre will also be taking part in Chinese New Year proceedings. Opening on Friday, February 4th at the IFI, twelve movies will be screened over seven days to mark the event. Among the highlights is the World Premiere of ‘Blood Oath’ (pictured), starring Gong Li; the award-winning films ‘Bodyguards and Assassins’ and ‘Apart Together’; the European Premiere of ‘Ip Man 2’; and Feng Xiaogang’s record box-office hit, ‘Aftershock’. The films will show in Dublin in the Screen cinema and the IFI and will also be screened at the Town Hall Theatre, in Galway, on Sunday 6th February, and in Cork, in association with the Confucius Institute, at UCC.
