Digital Sector to Enjoy “Strong Growth”

Ireland’s digital media companies are well placed to take advantage of the strong growth projected for the sector and will become increasingly important to the Irish economy in 2011, a report from Dublin’s Digital Hub has found.

According to Philip Flynn, Chief Executive Officer of the Digital Hub Development Agency (DHDA): “The continued growth and expansion of both the fixed and mobile internet is the main driver of growth in the digital media sector and this uniquely presents a global market for Irish indigenous enterprise and a global audience for our arts and cultural offerings.”

The executive also predicted “Strong growth” across this entire value chain with particularly strong growth in the areas of computer games, animation, cross-platform content for television and internet, mobile applications and the expansion of internet services – including technical, design and commercial services. He explained that a lot of the growth will occur as a result of Irish companies embracing the internet for business development and expansion.

The Digital Hub is an Irish Government initiative which was launched with the aim of creating an international centre of excellence for knowledge, innovation and creativity focused on digital content and technology enterprises. The Hub itself consists of mixed-use developments including enterprise, residential, retail, learning and civic space. The project is managed by Irish government agency, the DHDA, which was established in July 2003.

In the report Mr Flynn went on to explain how the Digital Hub will play a central role in this growth pattern in Ireland’s digital sector, saying: “The enterprise model fostered at The Digital Hub is one that will become essential in capturing that opportunity and ensuring Ireland’s economic recovery and future economic success. Digital media companies are typically small, creative and highly skilled – a format that gives them flexibility to withstand changes in the marketplace. In addition, most digital media companies in Ireland are international in their outlook, so are not restricted by the vagaries of the Irish marketplace.”

There are 90 companies currently located at The Digital Hub, including animation groups such as Kavaleer and Igloo Productions and multimedia agencies such as Calico Media, Stoneboy and Athena Media. The other groups include those in the areas of design, learning, e-commerce, software, gaming and mobile technology companies.

My Flynn concluded his report on the company with a positive outlook of 2011: “I am confident that this work will continue in the coming year, and that 2011 will see Ireland’s digital media sector grow in importance and contribute more to the economy overall,” he said. “Many of the companies based at The Digital Hub enjoyed considerable success over the course of 2010. This is indicative of the potential of Ireland’s digital media sector overall: undoubtedly, it will play a key role in the country’s economic recovery.” • For more information about the Digital Hub visit www.thedigitalhub.com
