Carlton Screen has published the top ten performing films in the Irish box office for 2010. James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ claimed the top spot, taking €6,214,107, the feature enjoyed huge success during the year including an Oscar win for Irish animator Richard Baneham and his team for the film’s visual effects.
‘Avatar’s Irish box office results are based on the audiences who saw the 2D, 3D and Special Edition of the adventure feature. The third and final instalment of Pixar’s family film series, ‘Toy Story 3’ brought in €5,720,478 at the Irish box office giving it second place in the list.
Third place went to Dreamworks Animation’s ‘Shrek Forever After’. Like ‘Toy Story 3’, this recent instalment of the fairytale satire was the final edition of an ongoing franchise and took €4,387,508 at the Irish box office. Fourth place in the list was clinched by Christopher’s Nolan’s mind-bending thriller, ‘Inception’ which brought in €3,938,334 and fifth place was claimed by Tim Burton’s dark take on ‘Alice in Wonderland’ which came away with €3,542,625.
Warner Bros’ Rom-com sequel, ‘Sex and the City 2’ came in at sixth place with €3.263,031 whilst the seventh film in Warner Bros’ ‘Harry Potter’ franchise, ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1’ brought in €3,088,593 in the Irish box office and claimed the seventh spot on the list.
Coming in eight on the list is Summit Entertainment’s ‘The Twilight Saga: Eclipse’, the third film in the vampire drama series which claimed €2,756,918. Ninth place went to Warner Bros’ ‘Iron Man 2’ at €2,125,132 and Nancy Meyers’ rom-com ‘It’s Complicated’ took the tenth place with Irish box office takings of €2,020,003.
