Rome Fest Picks Four Irish Features
21 Oct 2010 :
Five Day Shelter
The International Rome Film Festival runs from the 28th of October until the 5th of November 2010. This year three Irish projects have been selected to screen at the event including Paul Fraser’s ‘My Brothers’, Ger Leonard’s ‘Five Day Shelter’ and Ian Power’s ‘The Runway’. We also talk to Stephen Burke whose new feature, ‘Objects of Interest’ will take part in the New Cinema Network event and will compete for a €30,000 Eurimages Co-Production Development Award.

Irish Films Selected

Paradox Pictures’ recent feature, ‘Five Day Shelter’ has been selected for the Official Competition of the International Rome Film Festival. One of 16 films selected for the competition, ‘Five Day Shelter’ follows several characters through an urban landscape over the course of five days. Written and directed by Ger Leonard (Petrol Country Blues) and produced by Liam O’Neill (Northern Lights) of Paradox Pictures and Northern Ireland’s RedRay Films and Villi Ragnarsson (Happy as Larry), the film stars John Lynch (The Secret Garden), Kate Dickie (Red Road), Ger Ryan (Happy Ever Afters), Marcella Plunkett (Swansong: Story of Occi Byrne) and 10-year-old Emma Tuthill in her first acting role.

The film was shot by Tim Fleming (Once) and was developed by Paradox Pictures with funding from the Irish Film Board Regional Fund, Section 481, Irish Screen Entertainment, and Northern Ireland Screen. ‘Five Day Shelter’s RIFF screening will mark its international premiere.

Both ‘The Runway’ and ‘My Brothers’ have been chosen to compete in the Alice nella città section of the festival. This category brings together in its program an international selection of works made for young people. 12 films will compete in the category, two of which are Irish.

‘The Runway’ is written and directed by Ian Power (Dental Breakdown) and tells the true story of a South American pilot who crash landed his plane into a field in Mallow, Co. Cork in 1983. Told from the point of view of a nine-year-old local boy, the feature stars Mexican actor Domain Bichir (Che) alongside Irish actress Kerry Condon (Rome). It is produced by Macdara Kelleher (Colony), Brendan McDonald (The Yard) and Bernard Michaux (Lumen).

‘My Brothers’ is set over the Halloween weekend of 1987 and explores three young brothers' quest to replace their dying father's beloved watch in an off-beat and moving journey that ultimately leads them home. Written by William Collins (Escape of the Wild Thing), the film stars newcomers Timmy Creed, Paul Courtney and TJ Griffin as the siblings of the film’s title as well as a supporting cast including Kate Ashfield (Shaun of the Dead), Don Wycherley (Rásaí na Gaillimhe), Sarah Green (Shelter) and Eamonn Hunt (W.C.)

The feature is produced by Rebecca O'Flanagan (The Eclipse, The Running Mate) and Rob Walpole (Man About Dog) through Rubicon Films. Other crew members include PJ Dillon (32A, Kings) as director of photography, production designer Mark Geraghty (In America) and editor Emer Reynolds (The Eclipse).

Stephen Burke at the New Cinema Network

It has further been announced that the second Eurimages Co-production Development Award, worth $42,000 (€30,000), is to be awarded to the best project presented in New Cinema Network, the co-production market of the International Rome Film Festival. One of the projects competing for the award is a project entitled ‘Objects of Interest’ by Irish filmmaker, Stephen Burke (Happy Ever Afters).

The first Eurimages Co-Production Development Award was given to Bogdan Mustata’s ‘Wolf’ as part of the CineLink event held during the Sarajevo Film Festival in July 2010. The New Cinema Network event is described on the RIFF website as: “ a co-production market where the filmmakers - selected from among the world's most interesting talents on the independent film scene - find the ideal platform for presenting their new feature film projects and connecting with the most important players in the European film industry.”

Stephen described his project for IFTN, telling us: “’Objects of Interest’ tells the story of an Italian civil servant in 1930s colonial Eritrea whose quiet life is turned upside down by love and fascism.” The project is being produced by Jane Doolan of Mammoth Films and Stephen and the team are attending the New Cinema Network to seek co-producers. “The NCN team have set us up with a great selection of meetings over the three days, with producers and financiers from all over the world,”he tells us, before explaining the personal help the event will be to him. “The NCN programme has a high success rate with 45% of their projects going into production. The NCN Focus programme in particular is a great idea, because it facilitates the production of European directors’ second features. Our project has already attracted a lot of interest and if we made one new contact at these sessions that developed further we would consider our attendance a success.”

Asked if he is a fan of networking events such as the NCN he leaves us in no doubt of his support: “I think these networking markets are a great benefit to producers,”he starts. “To meet so many producers and financiers face to face over such a short period of time is terrific, it’s a one stop shop and the best case scenario is that working relationships can be forged that will continue onto other projects in the future.”

The International Rome Film Festival attracts an average audience number of 100,000 along with acting as a film market.
