RTÉ Launches RTÉjr & TRTÉ
14 Sep 2010 :
From Monday, September 20th RTE's children's output will become RTEjr for 6 year olds and younger between 8.30am to 3pm, and TRTÉ for 7 to15 year olds from 3.30pm to 5.30pm. The two new programme blocks will replace the format of The Den – one that has run for the last 24 years.

The new channel blocks, launched on Monday, September 13th, will be broadcast on RTÉ Two Television during weekdays and on weekend mornings. RTÉ Digital Radio’s RTÉ Junior will now become RTÉjr Radio with complementary services across the day. The new cross-platform offer will also see RTÉ.ie feature associated content online.

Speaking about this new direction in content provision for young Irish audiences, Sheila de Courcy, Commissioning Editor for RTÉ Television’s Young Peoples Programming, said: “This new direction is a re-imagining of our finances, our resources, and of our content. This is quintessential public service broadcasting for 21st century audiences… These schedules ensure that our audience are never more than thirty minutes away from Irish production; from stories and output that reflect their immediate world, and their lives.”

Where television programming is concerned RTÉjr will include brand new home-produced programming including RTÉ in-house show, ‘Hubble’ with Emma O’Driscoll and her new puppet friend Ógie; ‘Grubz Up!’ in which kids are shown how to grow, prepare and eat healthy home-made food; ‘Out the Back’ where we meet a gang of boys who come up with cool original ideas, build them and have a lot of fun along the way. Comedian, Reuben will join RTÉjr early every day with his high-energy, physical comedy.

Irish animation also features with Monster Animation’s ‘Punky’, a new animated series about Punky, a little girl with Down Syndrome, who lives with her Mum, her Granny Cranky, brother Con, and pet dog Rufus; Kavaleer’s ‘Garth and Bev’, a series about the brother and sister duo which returns for a second series of adventures and Kavaleer/Dinamo’s ‘Happy Valley’, the animated pre-school series based on traditional and contemporary nursery rhymes and songs, alongside the wonderful Fluffy Gardens.

RTÉjr online www.rte.ie/rtejr aims to be a hub of online entertainment for pre-schoolers. Children are invited to log on for a safe, secure online zone full of fun and educational activities and online programme content.

Moving onto later programming TRTÉ will look to include new home-produced programming alongside international productions. New home-produced series include ‘The Rumour Room’ with RTÉ newcomers Katie Van Buren and Jarlath Regan who will entertain with discussion, comedy sketches, novelty songs and cross platform content. In ‘elev8’, a loft, three residents, one fish and lots of guests make aim for lively live daily series with more new presenters in the form of Kildare man - Ivan Minnock, Sligo native - Seán Regan and Moldovan-born Diana Bunici.

Furthermore ‘Mission Beach USA’ features eight Irish 16-year-old guys and girls who take on the challenge to train for three weeks at the Fort Lauderdale Junior Lifeguard Programme while in house production. ‘Super Crew’, seeks to capture the highs and lows of Ireland’s would-be hottest teenage hip hop dancers who are competing to achieve their own hip hop dreams.

As with RTÉjr the content from TRTÉ will be available online alongside competitions and vlogs from the TRTÉ presenters.

This time slot of RTÉ’s Young Peoples Programming started in 1986 with 'Dempsey's Den' presented by DJ Ian Dempsey and the puppet aliens Zig and Zag. Ian was followed by Ray D’Arcy in 1990 who was joined by other characters such as Dustin the Turkey. Ray worked on The Den until 1998. Other presenters included Damien McCaul and Francie Boylan Jr before the broadcaster introduced a new system of having several presenters who included Kathryn McKiernan, Aidan Power, Taragh Loughrey Grant and Brian Ormond.

RTÉjr and TRTÉ will launch on Monday, September 20th on RTÉ2 from 8.30am.
