The Ottoman Empire

The Galway Film Centre and RTÉ funded short film ‘The Ottoman Empire’ has been chosen to screen at the Lund International Fantastic Film Festival in Sweden at the end of September. It has also been selected for a trio of American festivals including the Capital Irish ‘Solas Nua’ event as well as the Knoxville Horror Festival and the Southern Appalachian Festival in Tennessee.

The film, written and directed by James Phelan (Rásaí na Gaillimhe) stars Tom O Suilleabháin (Rásaí na Gaillimhe) as a seemingly insane man Tibor who has been missing for several years. When he appears again, he displays an irrational fear of couches and refuses to go remotely near any sofa. Perversely, his manic rants mean that the very first place he is pushed towards is a psychiatrist’s couch. Other cast members include Carrie Crowley (School Run), Gary Hetzler (Moonlight Mile) and Tara Power (Play Dead) while Buí Bolg Theatre Company worked to bring the films’ couch to life.

The Nemeton short was produced by Geraldine Heffernan (Kennedy’s Cadets) and was shot by Paddy Jordan (Free Chips Forever) and cut by Andrew Hearne (Bye Bye Now) with an original score by Tom Lawrence (Carpark). The film debuted at this year’s Fastnet Film Festival in West Cork where it was shortlisted for best comedy short. James describes his vision of the film for IFTN, saying: “It’s essentially four great actors in four great locations. The cast were wonderful. Tom and Carrie just got the spirit of the piece completely. Seeing actors of their calibre realise this script was genuinely thrilling. There are also terrific supporting turns from Gary and Tara.”

The Lund International Fantastic Film Festival is Scandinavia's largest festival for fantastic film. It runs this year from September 23rd to Oct 2nd.

140

Frank Kelly’s experimental documentary, ‘140’ has been selected to screen as part of the Downtown Film Festival in Los Angeles which runs from September 8th to 12th. ’140’ was shot on the 21st of June 2009 and was orchestrated by Frank. He contacted filmmakers he had met at previous film festivals and he circulated press releases in a bid to collect 140 film directors. Said 140 individuals thus proceeded to simultaneously shoot 140 seconds of footage in 30 countries across the five continents to demonstrate the connections between them and the places they call home.

The footage shot was assembled by Frank into a feature length montage of poignant visual moments – the exact same moments captured all across the planet. ‘140’ received a special preview screening at Hatchfest in Montana USA on Thursday the 1st of October.

The Downtown Film Festival Los Angeles (DFFLA) is a non-profit organisation dedicated to showcasing the best in independent cinema in the heart of the world’s Entertainment & Arts Capital. The festival’s programming looks to reflect downtown L.A.’s vibrant urbanism and its seminal role in the early days of American cinema.

Growing Up Gay

Crossing the Line Film’s RTÉ series, ‘Growing up Gay’ has been nominated for ‘Event of the Year’ for the GALAS (Gay and Lesbian Awards).

The series was directed Aoife Kelleher (No Frontiers), produced by Anna Rodgers (Today is Better than Two Tomorrows) with John Murray as executive producer. Filmed over 18 months the ‘Growing Up Gay’ production team followed the lives of six young people and, in the process, captured the challenging and even hostile experiences which lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender young people face in their everyday lives. The series also looks to explore the more universal experiences of growing up - from the ups and downs of life at home and at school, to friendships and falling in love. ‘Growing up Gay’ was made with the assistance and co-operation of BeLonG To - an organisation which supports young LGBT people.

Director Aoife Kelleher and Producer Anna Rodgers reacted to the news of the nomination saying: “We’re really delighted. It’s great to know that it had an impact on people. That a TV series would be regarded as an ‘event’ demonstrates how long overdue it is that young LGBT voices be represented in the Irish media. The nomination is a really positive affirmation for the young people who took part in the series, who with great trust, bravery and honesty shared their stories with all of us. On behalf of all of them, and our team in Crossing the Line we’re really grateful to everyone who voted and thrilled about taking part in the GALAS.”

The GALAS, now in their second year, were set up in 2009 by the National Lesbian and Gay Federation to honour lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgendered people and organisations for their contributions to Irish society, both north and south of the border. The awards are also to honour politicians, employers and other people who are committed to advancing equality and social acceptance for LGBT Irish people in Ireland.
