Cameras will roll at the end of this week on the Dublin set of Parallel Films’ ‘Neverland’ a two-part prequel to the Peter Pan story commissioned by Sky Movies HD starring Oscar nominee Bob Hoskins (Hook, Made in Dagenham), Golden Globe nominee Anna Friel (Pushing Daisies, Bathory) and BAFTA nominee Rhys Ifans (Not Only but Always).

The 2 x 90 minute project, the first original feature length commission for Sky Movies HD, is written and directed by Nick Willing (Alice, Tin Man).

The Irish producers on board include Redmond Morris (The Reader, Notes on a Scandal) and Alan Moloney (Triage, Intermission) for Ireland’s Parallel Films on behalf of MNG Films and in association with Syfy and Sky Movies.

The project aims to be a bold new take on the original mythology of JM Barrie’s famous story and looks to provide an intriguing history of many of the beloved characters including The Lost Boys, Captain Hook, The Indians, Croc and Neverland itself. In short, it is the beginning of everything.

Rhys Ifans will play James Hook with Anna Friel as Captain Elizabeth Bonny. Oscar nominee and all round Brit acting legend Bob Hoskins will reprise his role from Steven Spielberg’s feature Hook as Mr Smee. Further cast members include Raoul Trujillo (Tin Man) who will play the Holy Man and Charlie Rowe (The Boat That Rocked) will star as Peter Pan. It is slated to air in on Sky Movies Premiere HD in 2011.

Production is currently underway for the first part of the shoot which has the team in Genoa, Italy for a few days but the project will move to its new home of Swords at the end of this week for an eleven week shoot.

Nick Willing voiced his excitement at his involvement with the project, saying: "I have always dreamt of making my own version of this classic story and am deeply honoured to be involved. I have found Sky Movies and Syfy bold, innovative, and imaginative. The perfect partners for this ambitious mini series."

Alan Moloney praised Nick's dedication to the film, saying: “The story of Peter Pan is one that resonates for every generation. Nick has brilliantly crafted something that makes sense of the story we all know and love. He takes us back in time and gives us the origins of Peter and Hook’s story in a way that will open this world up to everyone, no matter what their age. We are immensely grateful to Sky and Syfy and delighted that the film is being made in Ireland.”

The project boasts a large Irish crew including IFTA winner Seamus Deasy (The Tiger’s Tail, A Film With Me In It) as director of photography and Emmy nominee Emer Ni Mhaoldomhnaigh (David Copperfield, Brideshead Revisited) as costume designer.

“The legend of Peter Pan spans generations, and never fails to delight and entertain,” commented Ian Lewis, Director of Sky Movies. “Despite many different interpretations, there’s never been a movie of how it all could have come to be – this is that story. Neverland is a fantastic coup for us and a landmark event for Sky Movies.”

JM Barrie originally gave the rights to Peter Pan to Great Ormond Street Hospital in 1929. Sky tells us that ‘Neverland’, which is being distributed by RHI Entertainment, will subsequently be supporting the great work of this institution. Budget information for the project is currently unavailable.
