BAI Reviewing Irish Broadcasting Market
16 Aug 2010 :
Multimedia production and consultancy company, Athena Media is continuing work on a review of the Irish broadcasting market for the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland. The company was appointed at the beginning of June following a tender competition and is led by Athena Media's MD Helen Shaw.

The review of the economic and environment landscape of Irish broadcasting will act as a stand alone project and will also form part of the larger BAI strategic statement 2010-2013. Shaw and her team will audit the economic and environmental aspects of Irish broadcasting including digital television, public broadcasting and the transition online. Ita Kennelly, Training and Development officer with the BAI has been heavily involved with the project and explains that its results will have dual functions:

The report will be geared towards the BAI strategy statement,” she says. ”We’re undergoing quite an extensive consultation at the moment and the work that Helen is carrying out is an economic and environmental review of the Irish broadcasting sector which will act as a source of key information in its own right - but the other role it will play is that it will feed in to the development of the strategy statement which is to be organised for the next three years.”

The report will be authored by Professor Robert Picard, Dr. Hessel Abbink Spaink and Helen herself, and she explains how the report will be carried out: I'm working with media economist Professor Robert Picard, who is based in Sweden and Boston and with the international financial consultant Dr. Hessel Abbink Spaink who is based in the Netherlands. Sergio Sparverio did Irish landscape research in June for the project as a freelance researcher. We've also had the collaboration of DIT academics Dr. Brian O Neill and Dr. Ken Murphy who have helped with specific issues and challenges.”

The report will further comprise of analysis within the Irish sector through the use of economic data such Nielsen. This will be examined in conjunction with key industry personalities and work in comparative analysis across key European trends. These will all be used in examining how similar and different trends utilised in different countries and their benefits.

As to the content of the report, a draft of which is expected in September, Ita tells us it will feature a lot of economic research: “There will be a large amount of economic analysis present in the report – it will be looking at trends across a number of sectors such as digital media and advertising and both commercial broadcast and PSB. They’re essentially looking at trends that are affecting broadcasting and broadcasters in Ireland. It’s been commissioned to give us a sense of where things are at for Irish broadcasting.”

It is expected that the report will be finalised in Autumn of this year.
