Summer Post Production Sizzles in Ireland
01 Jul 2010 :
Come on Eileen
Post production houses around Ireland are being kept busy as action wraps on dozens of sets around the country. IFTN caught up with a few of the post houses who drive the Irish editing force to talk about the projects they are currently working on and new directions being taken in the area of post production.

Irish post houses are enjoying the very positive complaint of having an enormous workload. Following their recent merger Screen Scene and Ardmore Sound are currently pre-mixing and doing a final mix on John Michael McDonagh’s ‘The Guard’ for Element Pictures and are looking at the sound editorial, recording foley and ADR for the RTÉ/ITV series ‘Single Handed’ which is to be ready for early September.

Ardmore Sound are also pre-mixing Jerzy Skolimowski’s ‘The Essential Killing’ for Element Pictures which will move into its final mix on July 12th. Other feature films that are in progress with the group include Zanzibar Films’ ‘2 Graves’, the DCP of which has just been delivered and ‘Lapland Odyssey’, co-produced by Ripple World Productions, which Ardmore Sound are working on in conjunction with Egg.

Screen Scene are putting the finishing touches to several TV series including Grand Pictures’ ‘Trivia’; Mind the Gap’s ‘Dig It!’ ; Kavaleer’s ‘Garth & Bev’; Straywave Media’s ‘Fade Street; Animo’s ‘Bradfellas’ and Still Fims’ ‘Sweded TV (Stereo Swipes)’. The group are working on several projects from Vision Independent Productions including ‘Who are you Kidding?’, ‘Take on the Take Away’ and ‘Do the Right Thing’.

Tangerine MD Richard Callaghan and his team aren’t short of work, editing projects such as Sideline’s reality series for RTÉ, ‘Model Scouts’. Two editors are currently working on parallel for airing later this year. Richard is enjoying the work this year has brought so far, telling us: “We're busier now than we were two years ago - we have DVDs, broadcast and commercial editing so we're busy across all levels which is absolutely great.

The Element Post Production’s Chriona O’Sullivan echoes this theme, despite being unable to reveal any titles the company are currently working on, telling us: "We have lots of broadcast and live work going on and coming up in the next few months - definitely keeping busy!"

Fresh from installing their new Nucoda 4k/2k colour grading and finishing system Film Master, Egg are currently finishing up grading work on ‘Lapland Odyssey’, as mentioned above, which is being carried out by Egg colourist Sebastian Guest. The company is now being used to grade two further features. Ripple World Pictures’ other feature film, ‘Parked’ is currently temporarily resident in Egg - the team have just finished the grading of the film and will now move onto the final grading stage of the process. The company is also working on a short film for Wildfire as part of the Reality Bites series.

BCTV’s Bob Caldwell is offlining three projects including Coco’s extreme sports series ‘Red Bulletin’, a two-part series about the global financial crisis for Animo under the working title of ‘Freefall’ and Sarah Share’s ‘Dermot’s Garden’, a six part series that looks at gardeners Dermot O’Neill and his walled garden.

Other works currently in post production include Jang Productions’ short film ‘Life’ which director, Cine-Electric’s Jason Foran descirbes as “A Bit Matrix-y, we’ve created all of the effects without using photoshop and just used things like harnesses, dry-ice and Co2.”. Also Dathai Keane (Eireville) is currently editing a 7 x 45 min historical documentary series for Abú Media’s to be broadcast on TG4 called ‘Seachtar na Casca’ and near completion is Finola Geraghty’s ‘Come on Eileen’, which is co-produced by Katie Holly (Sensation) and stars ‘The Mighty Boosh’s Noel Fielding and Keith Allen (Trainspotting) which is being worked on Eugene McCrystal.

Post production of the Franco/Irish/Swedish co-production ‘The Last Furlong’ has been postponed as a result of lead actress Rachel Hurd-Wood (Peter Pan) falling ill and the completion of principal photography delayed.
