Cinematographer Christopher Doyle has won the Shanghai International Film Festival’s Golden Goblet Award for his work on Neil Jordan’s ‘Ondine’.
The prestigious Jin Yue Awards (Golden Goblets) are likened to the US Oscars in Asia. Doyle, whose credits include ‘Hero’ and ‘Rabbit Proof Fence’, was present to accept the award and spoke fondly of his time spent filming in Ireland. Irish helmer Neil Jordan wrote and directed the project which features IFTA winning performances from stars Colin Farrell and Dervla Kirwan. The movie was shot on location in the small town of Castletownbere on Cork’s Beara Peninsula in 2008.
The Shanghai Fest, which took place from the 12 – 20 June, and the Shanghai EXPO, which runs until 31 October, have included a special showcase of Irish features and shorts in their 2010 programmes. Films selected for screening include ‘Zonad’, ‘Ondine’, ‘‘The Secret of Kells’, ‘Five Minutes of Heaven’, ‘Michael Collins’ and ‘My Left Foot’. The touring programme, supported by Culture Ireland and presented in association with IFI Reel Ireland and the Irish Film Board, is also set to screen at the Beijing International Movie Festival later this month.
