SPI Board Welcomes New Members

The new members of the Screen Producers Ireland board have been announced and include Coco Television’s David Malone and Vision Independent Productions’ Orla McGowan. Agtel/Independent Pictures’ Liam Lavelle was also re-elected to the board.

The announcement came as a result of the group’s AGM on Wednesday, May 5th.

Liam Lavelle has two decades experience at the forefront of the Irish independent television industry. Together with John Cummins he produced ‘Ear to the Ground’, one of the longest running series on RTÉ. Liam has also directed and produced many more of Independent Pictures other productions including ‘Dealers’ (Series Producer) factual entertainment series for RTÉ, ‘An Tuath Nua’ (Executive Producer) social affairs series for RTÉ & TG4, ‘Bia’s Bothar’ (Executive Producer) food and travel series for RTÉ and TG4, ‘Garrai Úr’ (series Producer) gardening series for RTÉ and TG4 and ‘Beastly Behaviour’ (Series Producer) for RTÉ.

Kildare born David Malone is an experienced Producer, whose credits range from ‘The Late Late Show’ for RTÉ to the controversial C4 assisted suicide documentary ’Reverend Death’. His crime series ‘MacIntyre’s Underworld’ was Official Selection: Best World Documentary at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival. Most recently, working with Scottish indie Tern Television, David oversaw Tern’s output from Ireland, delivering a range of factual shows for broadcasters including BBC network, BBC NI, and RTÉ. Now returned to Dublin, David's next project is an RTÉ consumer series with Coco Television

Orla McGowan commenced working in the industry at the end of 1988 with David Collins of Samson Films and worked concurrently with a fledgling Tyrone Productions. At the end of the 90’s Orla left Abhann Productions having worked in a financial capacity with Riverdance, to freelance in the Irish Film Industry. The Irish films Orla worked on include ‘Ordinary Decent Criminal’ and ‘When Brendan Met Trudy’. RTÉ advertised in the year 2000 for a Production Accountant for the IPU. Having secured the position Orla worked in the organisation for seven years. During this time the IPU expanded both in terms of personnel and annual spend in the Independent Sector. In 2007, Orla was offered a position with Vision Independent Productions as the Head of Business & Finance. Orla decided to embrace the challenge and opportunity to work again in the Independent Sector.

David Malone and Orla McGowan replace Coco Television’s Linda Cullen and Element Pictures’ Andrew Lowe on the SPI board who both recently stepped down.
