The 10th annual Oxygen.ie National Student Media Awards took place in the Mansion House in Dublin recently. Hosted by Kathryn Thomas and Dáithí O Sé, the event was attended this year by over 600 students and national media personalities.
The winners on the night included IADT’s Allyn Quigley with his short film ‘The Christmas Ward’ and DCU’s Samuel Hamilton who was crowned Journalist of the Year.
Geraldine Kennedy (Editor of The Irish Times), Noirin Hegarty (Editor of The Sunday Tribune), Niall Stokes (Hot Press) and Micheál Ó Meallaigh (TG4) were among the judging for the 33 categories which seek to reward excellence in student media.
DCU celebrated two double winners this year - Samuel Hamilton was crowned Journalist of the Year and also won the Best Magazine category with ‘Flux’, while Stephen Mangan was named Sports Writer of the Year and Features Writer of the Year (News and Politics) for his writing in The College View.
Trinity College scooped Newspaper of the Year for The University Times, with Caitriona Laverty of The University Observer (UCD) named Editor of the Year.
IADT saw Allyn Quigley’s short film ‘The Christmas Ward’ win the short film prize on the night, whilst Sean Mullen from Ballyfermot College of Further Education followed in the footsteps of BCFE alumni and Oscar winner Richard Baneham by claiming the award for animation of the year.
Judge Eoin McVey, Managing Editor of The Irish Times, said “The Smedias has very high standards and competition is very tight. Without a doubt, being involved in college based media is a tremendous training ground, and The Smedias are particularly useful for prospective employers in singling out the journalistic talent that is produced by Ireland’s universities. We attach great importance to the Awards and value our annual involvement hugely.”
